I was doing a little web research on Desmond Doss (the new Hacksaw Ridge movie).  I ran across his Medal of honor citation.  Check out the brief write up.  Never mind doing what he did fully armed, but he did it all with no weapon at all.  Wow...

Wow. Did he refuse to carry due to it interfering with his being an aid?

His religious convictions prevented him from fighting and he was in a conscientious objector status (he enlisted).  It really is an incredible story and a serious lesson about courage.  He was shunned and ridiculed by many because of his conscientious objector status and the assumption was that we was a coward and didn't have the fortitude to fight.  I'm looking forward to seeing the movie...

Medics didn't carry arms in WWII as they were proscribed by the Geneva Convention.

I respectfully disagree. They always carried arms for self defense. There are many stories that cite this. It was also something highlighted at the WWII museum I recently visited in New Orleans. The Geneva convention specifically called out firing on a medic (with proper designation) as a war crime.

I did some more research.  It seems that the Germans respected the convention and didn't shoot at medics, so they generally went unarmed.  Japanese didn't respect the treaty and targeted medics, hence many in the Pacific were armed.  Apparently it was a personal choice/
