This could be another huge ride.  Trails for everyone at this place, and a lot of places to watch the bigger rigs on the rocks.

This is a great park guys.  For those that had their first ride with us on the FS roads, this is a great next step.

The park is easy to get to and has a lot of different level trails to offer.  From dirt FS road type trails all the way to full blown buggy stuff.  And lots of ROCKS!!!

It has seemed like forever since a real wheeling trip has taken place.  I guess it is time to swap the 33s for the 35s; What a PITA, but for this trip it should be worth it.   //SLAMIN//

I'll be there Saturday for sure, but I'm not sure about Friday.

Nobody wheels on sundays...

I hope to make this ride. Have not been there in over a year and is a fun park for all levels. Danny, just a reminder... bring your barbie sleeping bag //LMAO//

If I'm there (not sure about accommodations at this point), and if the Green Machine is still rollin', then I'll wheel on Sunday.  That is a lot of "IFs".  My guess is that I will not still be there on Sunday since the park is so close to my house.  On the other hand, it is so close to my house I could just roll back out there that morning if there was a crew playing in the rocks.  It would cost about $50...which wouldn't be a major issue.

Nope, Matt...I am planning to go Friday and may jet Saturday after riding...depends on if I end up camping or staying in a hotel (which depends on the temperature!).

Clark...yep, I am planning to wheel Friday.  Gotta use that roll-over time off from last year.  Gonna make it a long weekend!

be denting a front fender or ripping on a plastic

OK, it appears an executive decision has been made at Casa de Whitten... Going out on Friday, staying at a Garden Inn hotel that night, and a highly likely departure on Saturday....but, if enough people are going to wheel on Sunday, we could stay over.  One bond holder is not happy about the high priced hotel instead of the 1-star "Key West Inn" option, but to upset the Chair of the Board would not be good for long term stability.

I'll do a day trip on Saturday.  TJ buggy should be ready by then (tranny fixed, new Atlas, new driveshafts, etc.).  If not I'll put the Krawlers on the red TJ.  As always, weather permitting - I don't wheel in the rain.   //OLDSKOOL//

If you come in later on Friday you can reach us on the CB.  We'll post up a channel on that Friday, prob channel 7.

We will have a riders meeting that Saturday morning.

I'll be camping through Sunday.  Last year it got to the mid 20's so if your camping... Be prepped because it might be chilly.  Small, non vented tents are your friend as well as a descent sleeping bag.

Suggestion needed.

Come up Friday evening and camp, ride sat, leave sat evening.

OR....

Come up early sat am and camp sat night, leave early Sunday.

What say you?  //:hlp//

Trying to make this work and wondering which would be a better option.

Thanks!

Weather dependent call eventually, but I would plan for: Friday - Saturday option.  More time in the seat.

I would say come up Sat AM if you're close enough, cuz there will definitely be more campfire activity Sat night than Fri night. Although I think I may bail after riding Saturday...depends on how I feel at the end of the ride, and if I camp...may stay in hotel. Weather looks good ( 32/58 ), based on average highs and lows, though, so hopefully camping.

So I'm checking out the youtubes of Morris Mountain, like ya do, and it seems like many just take bad lines and make stuff look more difficult than it is. I'm pretty new to the sport but I feel like I learned a good bit in Moab. Like in this video,
it seems his spotter is just giving him bad lines — any thoughts from the seasoned members here? Just opening up discussions on the topic as I plan on bringing my two-year old to this ride and want to play it safe.

Good, bad, and ugly isn't bad. Los Primos is a little nasty. There is plenty for 1 tons to play on. So it will hold anyone. Miller motorsports has a pretty good video back from rbd.

This will be a great ride for you, but keep in mind wheeling in the SE is 10x harder than Moab. You will literally take a different line in the afternoon than you did in the am, once the trails dry off a little bit it's a whole different park.
But this group has a lot of experience and most of the guys have wheeled here several times, so it shouldn't be an issue + there are bypasses at every obstacle. I can't wait to get back out in the woods! If it's to cold I'll be at the local hotel for sure!

That's not a good video to watch for Morris Mountain. That particle obstacle has three sections; good, bad and Ugly. He was in the middle section of bad with a crap spotter and open an open front. We'll hit that and have some fun, lots if fun safe lines to play on. Ben can show you his special line on Ugly.

One of the best things about this park is that there are plenty of bypasses. It's a great park to wheel.

WRT GBU, JKs will have a tougher time, esp on Ugly, as the breakover is very sharp.  Don't try Ugly without a good spotter.

Even Good is very tough when wet.

Warner Robbins Jeep Club.  Good club, met some of there guys, very nice.  They have an active club and forum, we share some forum members.  I know Michigunman and I are on their forum occasionally.  Yes, that video was long and drawn out but that particular trail is a good one. You can see in that video how many different lines there are on just that one section.  Sure hope it is reasonably dry.

Ghost dog led us back to camp when I got there last year with Kevin before anyone else was there.  This was my first REAL ride last year.  Wish I could make it this year but one of if not both my jeeps will be under the knife.  Hope you all have a great time.  I will be living vicariously through you all.

Ghost Dog LOL ... how that big white dog stayed clean in that mess is beyond me. A year later I bet I still have mud from that trip. I hope it stays dry this year. Sorry you can't make it, I'll say hello to Ghost Dog for you.  //;D//

deff going to try to make this one, sounds like a cool park in the right weather.
Thinking about camping, how is camping there? Is it like gulches, do we need to reserve camp spots or what not?
I don't think its worth towing, its only 90 miles from ATL.

Camping is first come first serve. I believe there is an electric hook up for some campers. The parking lot can be very muddy if wet, there are a few grass areas to pitch a tent on.

Here is the camping area (will be much less crowded on our weekend, this was probably an event weekend)

There is also room to put 3 or 4 tents right up near the bathrooms, there is nice flat spot with a fire ring.

Yes there are several trails you will enjoy + there are bypasses for the difficult stuff. This place is great even if you just come out to camp, hang out with everyone, and do some light trail riding.

thats what im doing.   till i regear i dont want to push anything. if possible.  If nothing else, i would come just to hang out, do some drinking at night by the fire, tell stories, maybe some will bring some shine and it will turn into a real party.   //SLAMIN//  .    dont worry, if they say there are bypasses and not to worry , thats a 100% that you can go with the group and there will be bypass trails around the ugly stuff, so at least you can watch .   its a great way to learn.. imo    //BEER//

Kent, you have mentioned staying on the bypass / easier trails until you re-gear.  Are you specifically concerned about the gearing you currently have (3.21 in the diff...correct?) or something else that you having done when you re-gear (lockers, chromoly axles, bigger tires, etc)?

naw.  i can do hard stuff..  did it before, i just am not wanting to push anything.  if you have never been on 35's with 3.21 gears, you wont understand. its like im going up stuff in 4th gear and everyone else is in 1st.   with the speed comes issues... bouncing around, i have to work 10times harder to stay slow.. even with feathering and clutch work, its hard.   Wes understands he has a standard., and has been in my rig.  this will be my last trip till i get the regearing done.  got to much stuff going on wont get to be back on trails till after April.  my daughter is graduating from college (Nurseing) and i got to head to OK end of april to deal with all that crap.

If I plan on drinking a lot (30 pack) I always get a packet of "Chasers". All you need the next day is a 32 oz. Gatorade.

Last time I got some they were $8 for like 8 or 10 pills, but WAY worth it. Take one after a every 2 beers until they are gone.

What is the drink of choice to not get headaches - high end beer, liqueur, Cheap beer ??. Lately it seems if I have 3 or 4 beers I get a headache immediately & I don't get the slightest buzz  //WTF//

Not a beer drinker, but I think if you are going to drink anything, get the good stuff.  Don't mix types of alcohol and drink a glass of water for every alcoholic drink.  If you feel like you drank to much, take Ibuprofen BEFORE you go to bed.  Drinking the water is not easy, but it will pay off.

Water is a good idea, that way, you'll have some beer for the next day. LOL.

You will notice a difference if you drink water every few beers.

I have a friend who can only drink Coors Light if he wants to awake without a headache after having only two beers (or more).  He claims Miller Lite will give him a headache.

My rule is to drink anything I want and drink a lot of water.  Depending on my anticipated consumption quantity, I may start prepping my body for the experience by consuming massive amounts of water a day in advance.  After drinking to the point of being significantly drunk, I will attempt to consume Goody's or BC before going to sleep.

I will have to try Chasers sometime...but not during this trip.

I wouldnt worry. Weather "people" don't know what they are doing. I am pretty sure they just throw bones with runes carved into them and read the message spelled out to predict the weather. Oh yeah, they can't forget the goats blood and frog testicles either.

I've decided to take the money I'd spend going on this trip & spend it getting the front axle fixed on the beater XJ.

The entire reason I got "red" was for offroading. I need to fix it & stop abusing my DD. My DD has 275K on it & it's just a matter of when,  not if, something will fail. I don't want that to happen 2 hours from home.

Catch ya'll next ride.

Unless the weather improves drastically (friday and saturday night is 100% chance of rain), I am going to drop on this trip.  Morris is not the kind of park that is fun during/after a solid rain storm.  We were there last year after it rained and it was spotty.  Hope i am wrong!

To the question about riding down on saturday there will be a couple of us going through Dallas on our way there on saturday morning. We can meet somewhere on the way and convoy down.

The tree situation will be favorable for hammocks. They will be a few yards away from the main camping area/campfire but there are plenty of trees on the edge of the parking/camping area.

I just hope the rain holds off. I rode here last year two days after it rained and it was a sticky mess in the morning. It did dry up and become ridable by noon though. If it's callin for anything more than 60% chance of rain I won't be going. Mud and I don't get along.

And the map for Sat is even better than the map on Friday, yet they increase the percentage of rain? Unless they're referring to weather that will move in quickly at some point during the day? Regardless, a much better forecast than previous.

I would go on the forecast, not the map.

For most it will be a no go and a wash out, so we may reschedule, but not sure when or where yet.  Of course anyone that wants to go can go regardless.

Not called it yet but it looks really wet.

Staff has discussed the weather with God.  God has delegated all weather related inquires to Mother Nature.  Mother Nature is currently not taking calls.  She did respond back by email and said she is not inclined to make any changes to the weather at this time, even for the Premier Off Road Club of Georgia.  Mother Nature is a bitch...

A decision will be made on Thursday once the weather is a little more set for the weekend; however, it is not looking good.

The rain date, if this weekend gets scrapped will be 2/22.

If it rains like its talking about then a reschedule is a good idea. Couldn't enjoy the trails at all and little to no traction.

I am in 100% either weekend. If the weather stays fairly clear then we will keep the ride for this weekend. We will know more by tomorrow afternoon. It will be more beneficial to postpone the ride than to ride when it has just rained, this park has NO traction when it's wet.

We will have a definite answer by tomorrow afternoon.

I am not sure, but probably depart around 8am EST and get there, fueled and aired down, around 9am local.  It would be nice to know what time the AM Friday crew is showing up so I can make sure I'm not wheeling alone for a few hours waiting on other people to show up.

Yep, i am in 100%.  Just wanted to see if you wanted to caravan down.

Ya, caravan is cool/good with me, but keep in mind my max speed is around 65 when trailering...so make sure that doesn't mess with your mojo.  Otherwise you can leave later and still beat/meet me there.   //:hlp//    If that doesn't mess with you too much, let's find a good location to sync and potentially have others meet up.  Being the selfish prick I am, I will start by suggesting a location close to me:  Publix (1635 Old 41 Hwy NW, Kennesaw, GA).

I have my truck CB operational now, so I'll be on channel 7 from the time I depart.  My handle is HotStuff...so be sure to call out for that :)

I was planning to follow google's directions from main roads, but it can be adjusted to work as a team:

   1. Head southeast on Old 41 Hwy NW toward Ernest W Barrett Pkwy NW    128 ft
   2. Take the 1st right onto Ernest W Barrett Pkwy NW    9.7 mi
   3. Continue onto East-West Connector    1.9 mi
   4. Turn right onto GA-5 S/Austell Rd - Continue to follow GA-5 S       2.8 mi
   5. Continue onto Maxham Rd    1.9 mi
   6. Turn left onto Thornton Rd    1.2 mi
   7. Take the ramp onto I-20 W  Entering Alabama (set your watch back an hour and your calendar back 10 years)   //LMAO//

I'm dropping my Jeep off at the dealership to get the rear main seal leak fixed. They are saying it should be good to go by tomorrow afternoon and then I just need to fill up and bleed the power steering system to see if that solves my issues. One question though for those who are bringing wives/family- do any of them ever just stay back at camp while you are out wheeling? The reason I ask is that my wife is preggers and the Doc told her no more off roading due to the bouncing. I'm trying to sell her on going still, but I don't want her sitting around bored.

Clark, what time are you leaving friday?

I am not sure, but probably depart around 8am EST and get there, fueled and aired down, around 9am local.  It would be nice to know what time the AM Friday crew is showing up so I can make sure I'm not wheeling alone for a few hours waiting on other people to show up.

  1. Doug-         Doug                 Friday AM
  2. Ben + 1       Krawler00           Friday early
  3. Garrick        Grizzly4x4          Friday early
  4. Clark -         Clark123456       Friday AM Hotel
  5. Blue Wes-    jeepson33s         Friday AM Camp
  6. Mackenzie     MakQ +1           Friday am camping
  7. kent10sne1  Kent                 Friday am camping
  8. Shaun-        zrxmopar           Friday - Sunday - Hotel
  9. Mark -         Michigunman      Friday - Sunday
 10. Will -           94xjsport94       Friday - Sunday
 12. Seth -         Metro                Friday am - hotel
 13. Jason -       RedDragonATL     Friday Noon Camp
 14. Tony -        tcdawg             Friday noon - Camp weather permitting

Early to me may be not be the same as early to a stoner/college_student :)  I was hoping for a more definitive time, but I'll assume 10am local is early for some.

I'm aiming at being there at 8am local.

If you want to caravan over with Wes and myself, be ready to pull out of the Publix parking lot at 8am.  Here is the address:  1635 Old 41 Hwy NW, Kennesaw, GA

There is a Racetrac next to that Publix for gassing up (cheap gas) and snacking up (expensive snacks, cheap drinks).

You will not have a problem finding my truck/Jeep combo in the parking lot of the Publix.

Good luck with the inspection!

See if you can get a plumber to come out and run a camera down the sewer line if there are lots of hardwood trees near it.

OFF TOPIC:

When I had slow drains at my old house, they used the optics camera to inspect it...and of course there were tons of roots in the system, but nothing was done to them (turned out to be a blocked vent causing the slow drains).  My old house did not have a basement.

My current house has a basement and I have not had anything done to my septic tanks since I moved in, 8 years ago.  What exactly (or generically) happens to the septic system with hardwoods that causes the basement to get nasty?

Hardwood trees.

There roots branch out, and if they are near the sewer line(septic or regular sewer) they will get into the line and eventually cause a back up.

I had it happen.  Cost about $1500 or so to replace the pipe in my yard.
Title: Re:
Post by: cru9 on February 06, 2014, 01:12:18 PM
Roots will grow through the drain line and slow down flow which over time will result into a shitty clog.

My wife is pregnant and she'd be coming with, along with my two-year-old son. Still need to confirm whether we are going or not, though. 80% right now.

Depending on how far along she is, she may want to ask her OB. They were horrified when she told them she went offroad with me this past weekend. She is 18 weeks along, so I am going to have to figure out how to start sneaking out of the house to go offroading  //;D//
We asked, she said it was fine, though. 13 weeks or so. We may go and decide to use the bypasses and just shoot photos/videos and let mini-me watch.

Packed. How's the camping?  Spread out or does everyone stay fairly close together? Group staying together?  Just wondering if I need to find someone with gatr before I set up my hotel. I have a Rubbermaid tub of firewood. It was booze or the tailgate tent to get the last drop of jeep space. So no tent. Weather looks good though! Be there around 4:30 trailer time.

In another thread someone suggested welding a nut to the top of the wheel lock.  I would YouTube the problem to see what creative solutions exist.

I've got a borrowed SWR meter at the house.  I'll try and remember to throw it in the Jeep before I leave in the morning.  I'm in a Silver TJ Rubicon with a hardtop and a green tennis ball on my antenna.  Find me on Saturday and I'll try and dial it in for you although I've only ever done a couple of these.  If you have a steel whip, bring some big sidecuts or some way to cut it as we may need to nibble on it if there's no way to move it up and down.  If you've got a fiberglass whip, you've probably got a thumbscrew at the top under the cap.

Hammer a bigger socket on to it. Don't buy locks.

Well it looks like I'm out. Dropped the Jeep off on Wednesday to have the rear main seal replaced. It was supposed to be ready Thursday. Now it looks like it still won't be ready today.
Is that a common issue on the JKs?

The 4.slow's leak with age, a leaky valve cover can look like a RMS leak leaking down the back of the block.

I left at the right time as I had no traffic issues and made it home for dinner with the family as planned. Hope everyone had a great afternoon. See you on the next ride.

Had a good time today. I got there around 8 AL time, and hung out at camp for a little while before heading out. Clark, John, Blue Wes, and myself headed to repair his Jeep for the morning. Got his ball joints taken care of along with other little things. Got his Jeep back to camp and went our wheeling for the rest of the morning and afternoon. The park is pretty nice, kinda small, but was a good trip. Really enjoyed getting up on 3 wheels there in the V ditch!

I'll post pics in the pic thread.

The Alabama group, CAOS, said they are going to ride in the morning.  I was going to make that run until I put too much adult beverage in my tummy and slept in the truck...now I'm going to get some good sleep in the hotel.

I would ride back out here on a non-GATR scheduled weekend if someone wants to organize it.  I was denied on a couple of obstacles I'd like to try again.

Very cool!  I was glad Alex talked you down from taking the truck out there.  I had no clue what the bypasses would be like, but there is no way you could have gotten away without some damage.

Looking at a 2012 2dr Rubicon that's by the house. It has 30k miles and not a scratch or dent on the underside.
If we don't see anything better, we're probably getting that one.

Yeah probably, from the way I had read about Morris, I was thinking that it'd be easy to take it down some of the lighter trails and that there'd  be bypasses everywhere for the harder ones and I could watch everyone else. Haha that definitely would not have been the case.

I assumed from the pics that Wes' ball joints blew out and took the axle shaft with them.  If the knuckle and outer C survived than that was a big plus for the repair job.  A lesson to be learned is to check ball joints periodically: http://www.wikihow.com/Check-Ball-Joints

If one ball joint breaks then the other will almost certainly go in another split second.

And don't go cheap when getting new ball joints.  Get the best you can afford.

Everyone I have talked to says Moogs are crap and that the Napa bjs are the way to go at that price point.  Synergy joints are probably better but spendy.

Wes may get to do a full BJ change in the near future!  He got Moog as a replacement for that side, but if that side went, how long until the other side goes?

I have the Alloy USA (Chromoly, supposedly) BJs.  I do not desire to ever replace a BJ again, but if I have to do it, I want to be in a garage instead of doing a field repair like Wes.

Wes knocked that task out like a champ!  The conditions were much less than ideal...he should be proud.

I think it was the other way around. U joint went, the axle ears spun on each other, and took out the upper ball joint and then the lower joint failed under the pressure.

Dynatrac makes some that are supposedly super bad ass and rebuildable...but they are expensive as hell, like 500 a set and the rebuild kits are something like 250. No thanks.

I wouldn't have thought that the u-joint breaking would take out a BJ unless he kept beating on it after the "crack".  Result is the same in any case.

I think it was the other way around. U joint went, the axle ears spun on each other, and took out the upper ball joint and then the lower joint failed under the pressure.

The repair crew had a better look at the final carnage.  The outer axle shaft ears were broken.  The inner axle shaft was fine (should be checked for cracks).  The upper BJ shaft was sheared above the knuckle (castle nut still attached and shaft still in the knuckle).  The lower BJ shaft, including the pivot ball, were completely attached to the knuckle (castle nut still attached).

We landed on the following conclusion:
The upper BJ sheered, which allowed the knuckle to flip/flop/flap, which caused enough stress on the u-joint and lower BJ to break the u-joint and allow the lower BJ to break through the retaining clip.

Well, actually it was the "Watch Wes do something he has never done before and give him three different opinions about what to do...at the same time...crew."  In the professional world we would be called matrix managers.

Did anyone with the club happen to pick up my two red Camp chairs? I'm pretty sure I left them at the camp fire. No biggy if not just hopeful.

Thanks.

I got them. Give 'em to ya next month or can meet ya somewhere. Let me know.

Many thanks to Rob for leading us around on Friday, and for pointing us in the correct direction to find Wes's jeep on Saturday morning.  I think we would have seen the whole park while looking for Wes's jeep if Rob hadn't pointed in the correct direction.  ;)

It was nice to be back in an ORV park with the GATR crew.

Thanks everyone. I put it up on a lift yesterday to give the under a better look. It's definitely never been off road before as there's no dents or scratches. It had a minor AT fluid leak though so while it still had 100 miles left on the warranty (35,878 miles) I took it back to the dealership to have them fix it. I'm hoping the snow we're supposed to get doesn't stop them from getting it fixed anytime soon.

And it's an auto, It's going to be a daily driver as well and I work in Downtown ATL. I got over the manual when I still had my Mustang.
