So wanted to go ahead and start the thread on this. Its a longer trip so a little more planning is required. Last year we got started early on the planning and had a blast. Its about 6 hours give or take from Atlanta.
Last year we stayed at some cabins on the Evart side. Only 2 complaints were poor cell phone service in town and the cabins were not tow pig friendly if your trailer is low and your pig isnt 4x4. They do have a store at the bottom and allowed Livingston to park his long trailer there. Town allows non street legal rigs to ride the road and it isn't to far from the trail head. We booked a cabin for 8, had 6 sleep in it and total was cheap for the weekend i think. Depending on my situation I will either get 1 of the small cabins for myself and a +1 or go with a big cabin and split cost again. Website for cabins that I have doesn't seem to work anymore but it was called Black Mountain cabins or something like that. You can find the phone number way down on this page http://www.harlancountytrails.com/lodging.php
The trails are good. Map is great. The rating can be a little off and sometimes the easy marked trails turn out to be a little rough. 31 day pass to the trails is $20. At the least I would want to arrive Thursday early and leave Sunday.
-
I'm in, and would like to split a cabin.
-
I looked at a couple of web sites and saw a lot of mud! Is it mostly mud holes and rock parks or do they have some GREAT trail riding also?

There is mud, some holes that look NASTY but you can go around them. There is rock, a lot of it, some trails that are good long trails not just obstacles. Its as close to Tellico as I have seen.
-
Thanks.
Not sure about accommodations, but I am in.

I have been trying to get the jeep ready for this ride since the last time you guys went. If i can get it done im in!
-
So are you guys thinking about going the 16th thur the 19th?
-
Larry, I will be leaving super early friday to be up there like last year, by 10-11. The cabins are great and is the way to go. They have a campground closer to the trails but Calvin said it was bad. Noisy, roosters in the am... so I am in for a cabin and yes, between 8 people, it was cheap. Jerm, if you do a double cabin, I will split with you. Trails are awesome and as Jerm said, closest to tellico I have seen as well. Looking forward to this trip and learned from last years ride, cell service is near impossible in town. One gas station, standing in just the right spot ;D It is well worth the cost to get up there. This year I want to see the rest of the trails I missed the last 2 times up!
-
I called them yesterday about a 8 person cabin, It sounded like a great deal so I went ahead and booked it!
The guy is holding the card, so we can pay when we get there. There are 8 beds, so the total will be about $50.00 per person.
Let me know if you want to reserve one of the beds.

I want to go bad but I am going to put that money in a rear locker fund. I want plenty of pics

Well I plan to be up there by 12. Hopefully we can get in the cabin an unload the Jeep and then go buy the pass and check in for ziplines. I am thinking somewhere around 2-3pm and its a 2 hour tour.

I zip-lined in Costa Rica, but looks like these folks didn't build a big boy system lol

I'll take a cabin spot.

http://gma.yahoo.com/georgia-student-fighting-flesh-eating-disease-zip-line-160611409--abc-news-wellness.html
A Georgia woman is fighting for her life after contracting flesh-eating disease during a zip line accident.
Aimee Copeland, a 24-year old master's student at the University of West Georgia, hopped on the homemade zip line during a kayaking trip with friends in Carrollton, Ga. But the line broke, cutting a gash in Copeland's left calf and introducing a life-threatening infection that on Friday claimed her left leg and part of her abdomen.
WTF
{btt}
Maybe white water rafting? ;D

Local trips are a welcome change so I can save for Harlan!

Planning to go as well. Probably not staying in the cabins.
-
Not a 100% on zip lines yet. If we don't I may stop by this place on my way up Thursday. It doesnt look like a super awesome park but its big, and free :o
http://wildernesstrailoffroadpark.net/
I passed by it last year and wanted to stop. Looks pretty much geared towards ATV's but says Jeeps and Trucks on the website as well. Only review I could find not blocked on the work computer is here:
http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=978148
-
Jerm,if you ride Wilderness Trails hope you are locked on both ends.I wasn't and exploded front end on Hance's ridge. And you are right most of the trails are for atv ,because the get some funding from Yamaha and Polaris for up keep.....just my 2 cents. As for cell service in Harlan, guys it hasn't improved was up there with my son and his buddies recently and if you stand at gas pump on one leg,hold phone above your head and scream you may be able to say hello and good bye but u better hurry and say it.
-
Yeah, the cell service is spotty at best. We must have been standing in the same spot Jon, I remember moving in increments of a few feet and getting a bar, then it drops if the wind blows ;D I could get a signal at the top of mason jar and other peaks, but limited at best. By the way... I AM SSSOOOOO READY FOR THIS FREAKIN TRIP! My wife actually wants to come along so if we can find a sitter for the 3 days, she will be coming up. She told me she had fun at the knob but did not like the up and down hills so much, she loved 93B though... go figure! I am still debating on coming up Thursday. Does anyone know when we can check in? Guess it depends on if the cabin is rented or not?
-
If you have to have cell service then pick up a $29 prepaid phone from https://www.appalachianwireless.com when you get to Harlan.
-
I still dont know if I will check it out yet, got a ways to go. I like the lack of cell phone service though but I did find "the spot" that always worked for me. I had 1 bar so I used speaker phone but had no issues talking or texting. Made 1 phone call every morning and evening and once you get up on the mountain you get service.
Ben, Danny said he has the cabin Thursday so I guess whenever. Bring the wife, Megan is coming with me and I am sure she would love to have another lady to chat with. We will be there Thursday but not sure if we will zip line, check out the other park or just have a lazy day and some mild trails.
-
Zip lines would be fun, but it will be a cheap trip for me. Maybe I can convince Heather to do the lines? But now I know it will be ok to come in Thursday, I will be there by noon or earlier. I want to ride, ride and ride some more!
-
I like the lack of cell phone service
My work knows that if I am 4x4ing to call somebody else. I NEVER have service when 4x4ing.

Looking the same for us, might be a cheap trip. Headed to Daytona start of Oct so who knows.

Others are headed to Harlan this weekend... Richard posted the cabins and the store/gas station below them are pad locked and shut down. Not good
-
maybe they remember those guys and knew what was coming {peek}
I guess we need to check on the status of the cabins. If they are out, camping is in or the other trail head side would be fine.
-
Well they posted all is good after talking to the cabin owner, not sure whats up.

Ben, Meg wants to know the status of your wife coming? She said she needs someone to drink wine with {cheers2}

Lol! My wife don't drink, but you never know :) I can't answer this as we are still looking for a sitter for the kids for 3 days :(

It was coupon/sale day at Kroger! Wife picked up chips, 2 packs of hot dogs and 3 boxes of poptarts for next to nothing... All for the Harlan trip!

Cabins are open for business. The gas station was closed for the week due to a change in gas service and Subway coming in to renovate the food area.
I've got the cabin owners cell number. He's the one to call to confirm or reservation or to get a reservation.
Don't get cabin 3, you'll wake up every morning with a hangover.

Yes, that was my first time. It was awesome, we had a freakin blast!

What was your favorite trail? Mason Jar wins for me... reminds me of tellico.
-
What was your favorite trail? Mason Jar wins for me... reminds me of tellico.
Yep, Mason Jar was great. Killin' Time and Grape Vine were also really fun. Pin Ball and Rail bed were good too but short...did those twice. Lower Rock Garden was a blast as well. Here's a note for you, trail 26 shows as orange(moderately hard I think), it totally sucked, don't bother.
-
We found that out last year with some of the trails. Sometimes they were marked a 4 and I am pretty sure my wifes 2wd Liberty could have gone through them, other times a 4 should have been a 5...
-
The cabin is booked already. Subway being so close will be awesome!! {letseat}
Forget the Subway! Drive your rig down to the Corner Cafe and eat Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner. They open at 9 am every morning and close at 10 pm. They have kick ass food and it was cost about $12 for two people to eat breakfast and up to $19 for two for dinner. No cooking or dishes to worry about. I ate there 7 Times in 4 days and didn't get anything that was not awesome.
Crawfords Cry(I had to winch at one point), Middle Rock garden,Lower Rock garden, Pin ball, Rail bed, Killing time Mason jar and about a dozen other trails that I can't remember the name of because I need the map in front of me.
The Apple pie moonshine was the bomb! I wished I had bought a jar of the Blackberry.
-
was the crazy old dude there then? He was the shine guy last year </LMAO/> I am jonesing for this ride bad! This is my favorite place in the southeast by far. Natural and wild. Glad you got redemtion on the place Larry. Last time you had issues on mason jar. Where the heck are the picks boys!? {letseat} {popcorn}
-
Pretty pumped myself. May have to check that place out for dinner 1 night Larry... poptarts for breakfast! A/C in my house is meesed up, hope it doesnt cost to much or no Harlan for me :'(
-
I broke my rear upper shock mount bar off on the 1st day. Removed the shocks and rode around for the rest of the day and welded it back on that night.
That was all the breakage i had in 3 days of wheeling.
Very fun trip and got to push the rig and driver hard on a few trails.
I can not stress having your trailer tires and trailer in prefect shape before you make a long haul. We had 4 tow rigs and trailers and lost 4 trailer tires total on the trip up and back. That's not counting the 2 tires I replace before leaving dalton ga.
-
was the crazy old dude there then? He was the shine guy last year </LMAO/>
Sorry to tell you but that guy passed away late last year.

wow, he was a nut for sure. That shine he had was awesome though!

How much are the cabins? Also I know that the camping isnt really that good but is anyone planning on camping? Danny, If i bring the jeep to you in the next week or two can you have it done in time for this trip?
-
the cabin i was in slept four and was 94 a night after tax. there are 3 or 4 different sizes of cabins with different prices.

It depends if all of the =1's need separate beds or rooms. Ben & Doug do you need two beds or a separate room?
-
Looks like it's gonna be just me for this ride so just need 1 bed. Also need to keep in mind, the bottom half of the cabin has I believe 4 bunks (short ones too) and the top section has mattresses on the floor next to one another. If a lady is coming with someone, they probably need to know there won't be much privacy in the cabins.
-
Yep top loft area is for tall people like Ben and I because we won't fit the beds. Meg knows about the lack of privacy, she is good with it.

Nice. It will be closer to 1 or 2 for us I would think. Hope to unload and be on some trails thursday afternoon if we dont zip line.

Yeah, were in! </ROCKIN/> We are hoping to take off Friday through Monday, but it that fails we're thinking of heading that way Friday after she gets off work. We're down for some cabin time as well. If there's no space left, we can just get us a smaller one though.

I'll be heading out with Ben. I have to leave EARLY Saturday morning to be back in time for my son's first football game. I can't believe they just gave us the schedule and his first game is the weekend of the Harlan ride :fu( I have been looking forward to this ride all year! So needles to say, I'll be wheeling as much as possible Thursday & Friday. Can we night ride in Harlan?
-
Yes we can, and we know what trail to avoid! I wired up my other rock light expecting some night rides
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
Bummer Danny, but the right thing to do! You'll have a blast.
What trail was that Jerm? Will you do it in the daylight?
-
Nope not even in daylight. In fact we saw it the next day in the daylight and said if we could of had that view of it we wouldn't have tried it. I think it was called Underestimated? Ben, Mike and I spent half the trail winching.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
Yup, underestimated. Of all the trail names I have seen, this one fits perfectly. ::)
-
Hard to do vertical day or night ;D
-
Its a little early but something to start thinking about as we got closer. Last year when we showed up almost everyone brought a mini propane/charcoal grill and we ended with like 6 or 7 but only used 2 of them... This yr we should maybe do a little planning. Say 2/3 grills? My grill sucks and is falling apart but I can bring a Coleman double burner stove and tanks for people to use with a small frying type pan and regular cooking pot with lid. I also plan to bring a 4 pack of TP and a bottle of dish soap that the coupons have got us. Pretty sure the cabins supply TP but never hurts to bring a few.
-
Is anyone planning on camping?
-
Hard to do vertical day or night ;D
Is this the trail? It reminds me of elevator at Morris Mountain. You hit the gas and just spin in place - no traction at all
/>
-
That's it. The end is damn near vertical and nothing to bite on.
-
Danny, Im bringing the Jeep up to your place on Saturday morning. Will you be there?
-
That's it. The end is damn near vertical and nothing to bite on.
Except the stupid tree that will take a bit out of a Jeep! The trail is long and steep with lots of rock, some loose, and a constant supply of water trickling down it to keep everything wet.
-
Don't forget that there is already charcoal grills at the cabins.
-
Man, that sounds fun! What's a few roll overs and broken axles anyway? LOL! ;D
-
A lot when you have to drive you Jeep home after the trails
-
HAH HAH!! Yeah amen, or as in our case, actually have to use it as a daily driver as well as a toy.. heh heh.

If I go, I will just be camping. Prolly 50/50 right now.
-
I might just sleep in the truck. I will throw in my tent and stuff and probably a hammock too, just in case. I will evaluate it closer to time. If weather is an issue I may find myself in one of the cabins.
-
I'm hoping to have my rig a bit more "ready" by the time we go. Diffrent fender flares, sway bar dis connects, winch, and CB. Should be doable, but we'll see I guess.
-
In order:
Got to have a CB! Critical for communication.
Tow points too.
Disconnects are a plus.
Winch is a good thing but not required as many of us do have.
Fender flares just rub, lol.
-
Yeah, thats going to be the 1st thing to get installed. (CB) Not to mention the easiest to get a hold of. Already have tow points though so good to hook in that department.. no pun intended.
Gona try to get the rest hung before we take off, but gota' clear most of it w/ the other 1/2. You know how it goes.
-
Yep, wife took my whole Jeep. :hlp
-
Heh heh heh ... yeah mine too. I only get to drive it when we go wheeln. Otherwise, she's the one who gets to drive it to work and back every day. How's that happen anyway? ???
-
Since Ben is solo, can I reserve his +1 spot in the cabin?
You'll have to spoon with him.

You'll have to spoon with him.
He could do a lot worse...

Sweet! That's too easy. Why in the Hell didn't I think of that in the first place?
-
Danny, do we need to paypal you or something? I know last year Seth had us send him money a few weeks before the cancellation deadline. How much is it?
-
I think he said like $50 a person. He told me it was not an issue to pay till we see him? {popcorn}

I held the cabin on a debit card, so we can all pay when we get there. It came out to about $50.00 a person.
I have been calling them for about 8 days now and cannot get through to anyone. I wanted to see how many beds are in each room. He told me it sleeps 8, so I was just trying to confirm the price. If anyone knows how to get in touch with them please do or let me know.

Danny, it's 1 big room with a loft, and a bathroom.

Yeah its basically a big rectangle cabin (well not exactly big). To the left is a fridge sink and table, bathroom in the back left corner. To the right is a couch and right, back corner is 2 bunk beds and above the bathroom is a loft with 4 mattress.
-
Yeah, we mite just pitch our tent right outside and just make use of the facilitits inside.
-
Yeah, we mite just pitch our tent right outside and just make use of the facilitits inside.
I don't think so. Lat time at Harlan we had a fella sleeping outside of the cabin fumigate the cabin and it was uninhabitable for hours.
Remember that Ben? </LMAO/>
Is there a bath house at this place? 8 folks on 1 bath is already a lot.

No bath house
-
What are we, a bunch of women who need to use the bathroom for hours? Jesus...some people. I got no issue if someone wants to put up a tent, maybe kick a few $ towards getting to use the bathroom and shower but its not my cabin to make the call, its Danny's. Never had an issue last year with the bathroom, we were not even at the cabin more than a few hours a day. There are trees to pee behind anyways
-
I just don't want to take up room if someone else wants to crash inside. I'm all good w pitchn' a few bills to help out though.
-
Facilities are more for Dawn anyway.
-
Jerm, I agree completely dude!
-
Me too. ;D of course we can all hang around pissing on trees and use the john, and the comments on using the john were made tongue in cheek from the dude that stunk it up, hence the LMAO emotiocon. </LMAO/>
I was hoping there was a bath house but I guess it's not a campground, just cabins.

single bathroom. Nothing to write home about.

Right on. Depending on her work schedule we mite be able to roll up Thursday, it's looking more like Friday for us though :bs)
-
Current plan is to be there Thursday afternoon. {letseat}
-
I am planning on heading up on Thursday morning. I know that several are from Winder/Dacula area so I would like to ride up together. I am staying at the Holiday Inn Express on 421.
-
Well, looks like we just mite be able to head up Thursday as well. </ROCKIN/> Possibly in the AM. Holiday Inn for a link up point sounds good to me. What time ya planning of hitting the road because it's going to take us at least 2 hours just to get up to there.
-
I booked one of the small cabins this morning. If anyone wants to stay in there you are more than welcome to. We can split the cost of it.

Just FYI, the small one that I stayed in said it slept 4 to 6. It had a very small room with two bunk beds, a loft with a queen mattress and a futon that pulled out. So technically it will sleep 6 but whoever gets the loft and the futon have to double up...so unless you bring a bed buddy it really only sleeps 4.
-
Thats still fine. I will probably only bring one other person, so I still have 2 other beds available.
-
Lookig like I can make this one as well so hope to be there all weekend as well if anyone Lookig for a splitting the cost or a spot where's I can crash that would be great.
-
Ok we got us a cabin too.( #3) It's a smaller one but got us the Military discount too. That said we have a bit of room as well, so if room is an issue, we got it covered. Just pitch a bit to help out w the cost. That should almost make it 1 bed per person.
-
I'm hoping for some cooler weather and a fire. Doesn't look like it will be very cool in the evenings.

SSSHHHHHHHIIIIIII.... I will take that anyday over this crap!
-
Let it be hot... I don't care... I'll take a hot day crawling rocks in the mountains over a hot day in the city anytime. {cheers2}
-
Weathermen can't predict the weather a week in advance, much less a month away. :bs)
-
True that, true that. But it sure sounded nice anyway.
-
Those temps would be fine. Not a forecast. Historical data.
Is this the same cabin from last time?
-
yeah i am hoping to have nice cool weather but hell i will take anything that this city crawling i have been doing lately finally done with school for the semester so here comes wheeling i can't wait to make it out to harlan and i will pitch in on the cabin if there is floor spot available.
-
Doug, yes, same cabin. You have never been here so make sure you look at the google map. I missed it a few times since I was looking for cabins and not a gas station ::)

Jared and Danny, who you guys bringing? Adults or kids?
Somebody mentioned this earlier, but there were 3 or 4 grills last time.
I don't mind cooking some burgers and dogs/sausagefor everybody if I have a grill or 2.
Who is bringing a grill?
Do you guys want to pitch in and do a group meal Friday night or everybody do their own thing?
Ben, don't forget the usual.
-
what's the usual? I have a grill but we need a count on who wants to bring one. I think there was a charcoal grill there? I think we can just bring our own. I am going to making this a cheap trip. Cereal mornings, PB&J trail food, brats at night.
-
I wanted to get a head count and possible time of arrival for you guys coming in on Thu. I am pulling out of my driveway at 4am. It is about a 6 hour or a little more drive to the cabins. I think Doug is going to follow me up but I am not going to make a special trip to meet anyone other than what is on my way. I want to get there as soon as I can so I can ride most of Thursday. I know a few are coming up Thu so the closer it gets, post times of when you think you will be there so I can either start riding or hang for an hour or so and get a larger group to roll out. This is a huge place and I want to ride as much as I can to see it all! I also only run at 65mph... 4.88's and gas mileage seem to be happy there ;D
And one more thing...
This place has a lot of big obstacles and some trails I would not recommend for newbs or under built rigs. So when we are all there, we need to figure out how to direct some of you lesser built rigs to meet back with the bigger guys or just make a smaller group with the smaller rigs to run around. I am only making this point because I see some new guys are coming and some rigs are stock or near stock. I don't know some of you or your wheeling history so I just have to throw it out there. Again, this place can inflict some serious damage to your rigs so just keep that in mind. I don't want to get in a situation where we get onto a trail that requires a pretty well built rig and we have to winch and tug a stock style rig for hours to get a vehicle out. It just makes for a long day and all of us want to ride as much as possible. But we can figure it all out once there. {cheers2}
-
Doug - I vote no shared meal friday night. Its easy for everyone to do their own thing when packing. I have a dual burner Coleman camp stove and 2 pots I will bring with me.
Ben - I am with you. Poptarts in the a.m., sandwich on the trails and dogs for dinner will be my food. Should be there about 2pm Thursday as of now but maybe a little earlier, drop stuff at the cabin and head out. As the date gets closer give me an idea of what trails you plan to hit Thursday and I will head that direction and try and get you on the CB. I want to ride as much as possible and maybe some night rides as well.
Everyone plan to buy a map. It is well worth the price and is very well done. If and when we split into groups it is very easy to follow and with the use of CB's we can always meet back up like we did last year.
-
Following you Ben @4AM.
-
Just called to confirm our cabin. We have the large cabin (sleeps 8)
Total = $378.42 ($48.00 per person) {letseat}
-
$2 less than I thought {cheers2} I head 85 north so as it gets closer to the leave time, we can discuss a meeting area on the way.
-
i may be down for following as well i am guessing that the comment was towards me huh BEN hahaha </LMAO/> but i am looking forward to getting out there again been there with TTORA guys and had a horrible time with them but i can't wait to make it out there again is adam going?

Extra $4 for the beer fund for me...

David, that comment was not at anyone. Just letting anyone who wants to head north know. Like I said, 65 is my speed and I know some of you are lead foots.
Adam... {hardlaugh}

On the assumption that my motor swap is complete and checked out, I'll be heading up Thursday morning as well, probably leaving around 6:00 to arrive noonish. From my house the shortest route is via I75. Likely staying at the Mt. Aire motel as I did time before last. If UPS hadn't lost my Stak input shaft the motor might already be sitting in the tub.
-
Doug, my +1 is my Dad. No kids.
Plan is to be there 2pm on Thursday.
I will bring my small charcoal grill and camp stove. I'm fine with a group meal if that's the consensus. Either way!

Thanks Jared, I knew that and had forgot. //OLDSKOOL//
I'm cooking something good. {letseat}
-
Ben, I would have to agree about maybe splitting in to grups at times, depending on which trails are going to be taken. I will be the 1st to admit, my rig is not even close to ready for taking on serious obsticals. And damn if I'm gona be that guy who gets pulled out every 1/4 mile. Not to mention, it's also a daily driver so serious breakage in a big no go. At least for now anyway.
That said, Dawn and I are good with what ever. Honistly, we just like to get out and hang out anyway. We aren't in it for the biggest and baddest on the block. So if anyone else is in the same boat, no shame. We can still get out and have a great time! </BEER/>
On another note, We will be leaving Lagrange at around 6 and it will take us a few more hours to get up there. I'm expecting to arrive at around 2 that afternoon.
-
Oh and 1 more thing, we have a small grill as well we can bring up. AND no one plan too much for dinner Saturday night. We got it for everyone! {cheers2} Our little way of saying thanks.

//LIKEBUTTON//
The smaller guys will have plenty of fun. Alot of the trails are short and most have a way to get to the top on another route. But some are the type that once you are on it, there is only one way out. {letseat}
-
It looks like there are 4 or 5 grills. I will bring one also. I am looking to get into a cabin. Anyone have room?
Ben and Doug and Danny,
I would like to ride up with you also.
-
For those of you that have never been there, use this address and put it in google maps. It will come up exactly where the road goes to the cabins. Sals Branch Rd @36.865263,-83.204272 When the map comes up, you will see the cabins to the right. The name of the cabins are black mountain cabins. DO NOT USE THEIR DIRECTIONS. It will put you farther into town. There is also a chevron where you turn off 38. If you cross the bridge down the street (200 yds or so) you went too far. Also, this is a dry town. Bring accordingly. There is a small grocery store down the street. Man, is it time to go yet? {letseat}
-
lol, we're taking and planning like it's this weekend
-
This is the event of the year! Only place better than this is Moab. ;D
-

Yeah we have some, we're in a smaller cabin, but other than Dawn and I there is no one else in with us so far. </BEER/>
We're not going to arrive until later that afternoon though, so if you dont mind moving what you mite have 100 ft. between the time you get there and unload and the time we arrive and sign for the place.
-
Ive still got places in my cabin as well.
-
i am also bringing a grill and food as well and ben i was just joking but have no problem hangin with the little guys wheeling with them and yall as well. and Ryan could i crash on yalls floor? should be there around the same time you all get there???? and i heard from what you told me that Dawn can cook so i can't wait to try her food hahahaha can't wait to go wheeling
-
David, yeah definatly man. So far as I'm tracking, we still have beds available so no need to take the floor bro.
BTW, you're in Nunan right? If so that's on the way for us. You wana meet up some place along the way and ride up together?
Her cooking is off the chain! One of the MANY reasons I married her.. {letseat} I just hope we're not biting off more than we can chew here.. lol
Who's calling who little? </ARMATA/> heh heh j/k

Yeah I feel ya, there's still a few little things I gota get done with mine as well. Speaking of, Ben thanks for the link for those discos man. They work great! So far at least. {cheers2}
-
I've got rock lights and some Rigid Dually's on their way. Other than installing them I am READY!
-
Not bad... i need to re-tune my CB, change the oil/diff fluids and finish the bend on my skid. Skid should be done saturday, the rest will be done the weekend before Harlan.
-
I will probably change the rear diff fluid before this trip. It's due. But I am sure it will look like it was just done. Always does and I feel like I just wasted $ on it //OLDSKOOL//
-
Get the ARB covers with the dip stick. Cool idea and design.

Same here but it says 15k miles so I do it. I also never changed it from the aussie install and I think your suppose to after a "break in" period. Jeep just hit 28k miles so a change before Harlan will be right on schedule.
-
Dude, you need to do the front then...
-
Dude, you need to do the front then...
Yep I plan on it... either next weekend or the weekend after. I only drive a few miles a day so a few more days wont hurt anything at this point.
-
Sigh .... is it time yet? </HANGING/>
-
Is this cabin same one as last year with steep gravel drive up to cabin? Is there plenty of trailer parking if i decide to tow?
-
Steep barely describes it but yes. There is room at the top but not a whole lot so if other rigs and trailers are already up there it could get tight
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
And keep in mind, you will use 4wd to get up the road towing. Ask Randy, he knows 1st hand. Last year they let us leave trucks and trailers at the gas station.
-
With a single-vehicle trailer it's certainly feasible to unload at the gas station and drive the trailer empty up the road. Even my 2wd truck could get to the level with the first cabin, where there's extra parking. It's not so much that it's steep as that it's covered with loose gravel.
-
There is also a little church on the left just before the driveway that you could pull into and unload, then pull the trailer up empty. Doing this or at the gas station will probably make it easiest for those trailering.
Those that pulled their trailer up last month hit it pretty hard up the paved part of the driveway and carried a lot of momentum to get up the the gravel/steep part. If you've not been on the it before, you probably won't hit it hard enough and if you don't have 4wd...it's not a place to be stuck with a loaded trailer.
-
Ok, so 4wd LOW in the taHOE should drive right up.
{letseat}
-
Ok, so 4wd LOW in the taHOE should drive right up.
{letseat}
Commit to it!!!! You'll make it.
-
Doug, ask Randy. This is where he almost fell off the mountain... while in his jeep! Speed is your friend here!
-
The HOE will crawl it. //OLDSKOOL//
-
I really want to make this, but it'll be a last minute decision. Hopefully it can still work if it's possible.
-
Ok, so 4wd LOW in the taHOE should drive right up.
{letseat}
4wd HIGH and you will go up. The 1st hill is paved 90% of the way up. The 2nd hill is more about carrying your momentum than anything else. If you drive to the VERY top and swing to the left there plenty of room for you to do a U-turn with the trailer.
Heck you can drive up the 1st hill to big rock and unload on the flat area and then drive the truck and trailer up the 2nd hill like it is nothing.
My buddy Eric drove to the top in 2wd and my buddy Bo drove to the top in 2wd, but I used 4wd high.
-
Looks like it's sleeping arangements are good to go. Glad we picked up some extra cabins for sure. No worring about 1 particualr can getting nuked.... </LMAO/>
-
Still trying to work out if I'll be able to make this...hope so! Y'all are making it sound awesome!

It is well worth the trip! Other than Moab, I will not miss a harlan ride. Only a couple of weeks to go!! Ready, ready, ready!!!

wish I could do this ride just don't have a way of hauling the jeep if something happens. I would hate to see how long I would have to wait for AAA on that one. make sure ya'll take some good pics

Yep yep you know it </ROCKIN/>
Ill be driving my Jeep up and back just like last year.

2 weeks 16 hours, and 10 minutes. And it's gona be the slowest 2 weeks ever!
:hlp

I still got to bolt up my engine skid. Got it bent up with a sledge and torch but just have not bolted it up yet. Also need to change my front diff. Rear diff and oil can wait till after Harlan. Probably need to re-tune the CB as well...
-
well I will be talking to the better half tonight to get her input so maybe I'll get a green light for this one. and before the wise cracks start flyin I'm not getting permission just input ;D
-
ballchain story of my life man ;D
-
just wondering does everyone take there groceries with or buy stuff when you get there?
-
I take mine. I don't eat a ton and what I do is basic survival stuff. There is a grocery store about 1 mile from the cabin. Little, but has all the stuff you need. But just a reminder, this is a DRY town. But you can find some shine in them thar hills </BEER/>
-
Keep your fridge foods limited because the fridge wasn't super cold last time we were there due to everyone using 1 fridge. Breakfast is easy, pop tarts. Lunch last year was peanutbutter and honey sandwiches and chips for me. Dinner was hotdogs and hamburgers and chips. If your bringing meat freeze it at home so it will stay cold in the cooler on the way up and stay cool in the fridge while slowly thawing.
Then the important stuff, water and beer.

I feel ya Jerm. Breakfast is cerial, lunch is MRE's, and Dinner .. well, y'all can relax cuz thats on us for atleast 1 night. {cheers2}
As for the sensitive items, (water and beer) oh yeah, getting packed in mass. </ROCKIN/>
-
The store at the bottom of the hill from the cabins has ice. Most people just bought a bag a day or so to keep their beer in coolers cold at the cabin and left the food alone in the fridge.
-
Really not a bad idea there. Practical and easy to do.
-
How hard would it be to make this trip last minute? I'd like to go, but no clue if its doable yet
-
Hey Slyter thanks for feeding us 1 night.
What r u guys planning to have? Can we help by having paper plates or plastic utensils or deserts? Which night?
I have a food cooler that plugs in and a beverage cooler. I will be grilling 1 or 2 nights.
-
The corner cafe in town (1 mile from the cabins) has kick ass cheap breakfast, lunch and dinner.

well it looks like I'm in just gottado my oil pan gasket, would love to do my power brakes but might just stick with the manual don't want to open a can of worms
-
How hard would it be to make this trip last minute? I'd like to go, but no clue if its doable yet
Jay, you could do it last minute if there was still a cabin with a spot left. It's a 5 hour drive from you. You can google map directions, just search on Evarts, Ky. Pack some clothes, some money and make sure your rig is ready to make the trip...and go. You can stop on the way to get groceries and beer.
One thing would be to try and let someone know before they all get up there. Cell phone coverage is awful in Evarts, actually non existent, if you have AT&T. If you have Verizon there is a new tower that helps out a good bit but even some Verizon folks had trouble. So you'll want to not be so last minute that everyone is already out of cell coverage.
-
I remember getting a signal at mason jar entrance. It is the highest point out there. Man, I am soooo ready for this ride!

Yep once we got up the mountain I had enough service to text and sometimes make calls. You are not kidding Ben! Ready to be in the mountains

If everyone or even a few people want to contribute, that would be cool! Really, maybe just whatever side you mite want. We're hoping to do up some stakes for everyone, but we are going to have to see. Plates and other flat ware would be nice. But I guess it's on the individual. We were thinking the last night origionally, however I'm starting to think maybe the 1st or 2nd night would be best as it'd really suck to have it go bad on us. Again we'll see I suppose. Maybe we can find a way to keep it long enough. {letseat}
Really though, we just wanted to kinda show our thanks to the crew. I know we're the "new people" and all, and have a lot to catch up with. We just don't want to make it seem like we're just a couple "hang arounds" or something.
-
This group is very welcoming... I can say that from personal experience since I'm only in my 2nd year. You'll learn a lot on every ride!
-
well now I'm gonna feel bad because I was hoping to hang around and {popcorn} {cheers2} ;D just kidding I hear ya.
-
There will be lots of hanging out at night and drinking. I am on vacation so late nights and lots of beer. We never really got started super early last year and still spent lots of time on the trail.

OK, I know I should have probably done this before I got all excited about this trip, but I have been watching a bunch of Harlan YouTube videos tonight....and....Oh, Boy!
So, are you guys saying there are some milder (I know this is relative!) trails, too? I've got 35s (KM2s) now on the 4Runner, though, so that should help with ground clearance and getting onto those bigger rocks, but I don't have the articulation up front with my IFs, ya know. Locked front and rear with 5.29 gears, though.
And, can you ride up to some of those obstacles and go around, or are they single-track, so-to-speak? Mason Jar was one and pinch rock, I saw a waterfall too, that looked pretty awesome. I'm game to try bigger stuff now, just don't want to put it top-down, not having a cage and all. Scratches and dents OK, caved in passenger compartment, not so much.
Like you've said in other posts, we can break into more than one group if it warrants it. I don't want to slow anyone down, either. Just looking for some reassurances, I guess. *hold me* ;D
-
Yeah man, I'm in the same boat. And yes there are lots of trails up there which are far less nuts. That said, we can definately ride together. If I'm not mistaken' I think David's gona ride B group also. I definately feel ya in that I don't wana be "that guy" who has to get pulled all over the mountain. All I gota do is pick up a trail map when we get up there to recon which ones we want to hit up. Either way, it's gona be a blast!! //SLAMIN//
BTW ...... 10 days, 10 hours, and 35 minutes, and some seconds to go!!! </TJ/>
-
I am going to be honest Jason... I think you can take that thing just about anywhere we went last year! Mason Jar actually has a few lines and I am sure the youtube video showed the badass ones. The only worry I would have on mason jar and your rig is the roof rack. From what I remember there is 1, maybe 2, spots where the pitch of the trail and rocks get you off camber towards a tree. First time I ran it I came close to my soft top, second time I got the soft top (but didnt tear) on the tree. Part of my problem was probably my line as there are much taller rigs here who didn't hit the tree but came close.
When we went last year Lawton had his 4 door JK on I think just a 2 or 2.5" budget boost and Rubi 32's, no lockers, no side rails and he took that down every trail the rest of us did and only suffered a dent on his rocker panel.
Breaking into 2 groups is no issue as said before. Just everyone needs to make sure they have a CB, it works, and plan to buy a map. Also be ready for the unexpected because some of the trail ratings are a little off IMO.
-
^^^
Jason, Jeremy hit right on the head. I've seen your rig and you'll have a blast there.
I think the one area right at the entrance to Mason Jar will be a close to your rack due to the off camber but with the right line you'll be fine.
Enjoy!!!

Well, that makes me feel a lot better. I just didn't want to go all that way and not be able to run much.
The project list is getting shorter, but still some stuff to do before next week. Want to get a fresh alignment now that I have the bigger tires under there, too.
Ok, NOW I'm excited! ;D

Yeah, I've already gotten out the chrome eraser (spray-on bedliner) and blacked out the rear bumper til I get a replacement...those pics are a few weeks old.
I also painted the plastic "chrome" front grille black. I'll get more pics when I get it all done...going for a black & red thing.

Is the check in thread up to date?
Anybody else?

It is a possibility now that my boys won't be coming with me. If they don't, I may see about grabbing a bed in one of the cabins, if there is still one available. If they boys come, I think we will just stay in the campground. I should know for sure by this weekend.
-
Still hoping to have new engine in time, but not looking that good right now. :'(

I messed up my front end this weekend and it is sitting in Allsouth. I am pretty sure that it will not be ready by the KY weekend, so I will not be coming.

talk about sucking down the gas if I didn't know better I would think my ol girl has a 1 inch garden hose.

Ben, you said it there bro! {letseat}

So woke up early this morning and could not sleep. I made the mistake of thinking of the trip. Laid there thinking for about an hour. Damn time... come on!
-
</LMAO/> I can't begin to tell you how many times I have done that myself.
-
Add a +1 for me and my cabin. A buddy of mine that is a professional photographer is coming along.

{cheers2}
Looks like I will be leaving early Saturday, around 3 pm. Going to see some friends in Lexington Saturday night so I will need to get in all the wheeling I can Thur/fri and early saturday.

Weather is lookin awesome for this trip! Might actually bring a jacket for the night rides {cheers2} {cheers2} {cheers2} {cheers2}

</ROCKIN/> Ok everyone, confirmed we will be bringing steaks for everybody for 1 nights meal. Again, bring whatever you mite want as a side, and if you have a special rub or marinated that you'd like on yours bring it as well. We have a small grill and can do a few on that, but another one going would definately help when we go to do this.

I think Ben has a special rub.... </LMAO/>
-
Steaks on the grill FTW!! Thanks! (without ANY of your special rubs...)
-
Looks like I'm out. Earliest completion on the exhaust is Wednesday, so no time for in-seat testing.
-
I need a quick and easy crawling light solution....
-
Sitting here writing out my to bring list. Seems really short, but when you have a roof and a bed waiting, it is so much easier. Weather is falling in perfectly for this trip. Jerm is right, bring a jacket and possible pants. Never know what will happen. I sat on upper 2 till 3am and it got cool quick! Ryan, you and Dawn rock </ROCKIN/> I have not had a steak in a long time so looking forward to a hot steak. Tony won't be there for my special rub so do whatever you want to that steak. It will be just fine ;D Now if I get anything done this week at work, it will be a friggin miracle. All I can think about is thursday @ 4am! And for those who want to follow me up, I am thinking to meet at the QT at the oakwood exit off 985 at 4:30. Top off the tank and roll north. So if you are wanting to follow me up, let me know. </TJ/>
-
Yep not having to set camp makes it a lot easier. I will start packing tools up tomorrow morning and such. Load up Wed night, head out Thursday early... Cant wait! We finished buying food and stuff today and I am ready to be in the mountains.
-
Got the seat out today and loaded my bins in the back. I will be packed up and ready by tuesday night. Just food and drinks left to do {letseat}
-
You guys are on the ball! I was going to pack some stuff up yesterday. Went out to put the tag on the trailer and noticed that the dogs chewed all of the wires from under the jeep :fu( Spent most of the day trying to re-wire it. I think it should be got to go now but I have not even started packing yet.
-
Man, I haven't even started packing. But I have all day Wednesday off so I'll be loading up then. Gota' get my tires balanced a bit too before we head out as well.
-
I need a quick and easy crawling light solution....
I spent a good number of hours this weekend fishing wires through the frame and soldering joints for the LED lights I bought at Oznium.com... Not quick or easy!
Evidently ORO is redesigning the LiteSpots, so I don't think you'll be able to find any of them. Sounds like a trip to Autozone or Walmart...
-
I love my ORO litespots and they were pretty simple to install. Tony helped me and with both of us running wires was easy. Very bright
(http://img.tapatalk.com/a693799c-f256-9d79.jpg)
-
Cheap and easy? Some of those small round driving/fog lights from Walmart or an auto store for $20. Pre wired, brackets, fuse, switch. Just buy an extra spool of wire to rig 1 in the back. Ran mine for months with no relay with no issues but I have a relay now. You can just go to RadioShack to get a waterproof relay.
I got to be on it packing. Getting off at 8pm doesn't give much time in the evenings so I got to make the most of mornings

That is correct... tried for 2 weeks, and they tried for a week to patch me a set together.
Have done nothing....
-
Jerm, autozone and wally world $20 lights are the bomb. Cheap and easy to install! 3 days boys... 3 days!
-
Tony, you coming or what? {popcorn}
It's very iffy
Not going to make this trip. It was wishful thinking at best to think I would get back from a week's vacation and be able to head back out after only 1/2 a week of work. I'm covered up so I'm officially out. I hate to miss it but there are some good fall rides coming up so I'll be on the rocks soon again.
You guys have a blast and take plenty of pictures.
Also, I forget the names of the two trails that are near the Putney entrance, I would say the north east corner of the property. They are closed, don't waste your time trekking over there as it's a haul from the Evarts entrance.
-
Yes, it is a long haul for that side of the park. I don't remember anything big on that side anyway. Sorry you cannot make it. You will be missing out :smoke
-
Man, real lame you can't make it bro. We'll deffinately be taking pictures though. You gona make it to Jeepfest dude?

I vote Danny as well. Ill even drive it in there for him </BEER/>
I cant even tell you how excited I am... Forget the wheeling part. Just to be in the mountains. Its a basic way to say it, but I spend mon-fri in Jail so nature is a welcomed change.
-
Right there with ya Jerm. I am content just knowing I will be in the mountains in a few days. Forecast shows 50's saturday night too {letseat} So who is rolling up with me Thursday? Danny, Doug and a few others I thought.
-
I am......
Drive or tow, hmm.......
-
I may try and catch you guys on the way. I would have to leave my house at like 330 to meet up with you guys.
-
Ill be on the other side of the city but should be there around noon with yall.
-
Doug, just drive it! Save some $ in fuel. You gonna be on the bypasses anyway ;D
-
I'm in for following ya up where and what time
-
Gonna post this again and in BOLD
If you want to follow me up, PLEASE be at the quicktrip at oakwood off of 985 at 4:30am!
I will be topping off the Jeep and rolling on hopefully by 4:45. I want to get up there as soon as I can to get a good days worth of wheeling in. Would like to hit Mason jar {letseat} I have attached a google shot showing the area.

We'll be taking off by 0500. Putting us past Atlanta by 0600 and there by noon, noon 30 ish. We mite even catch up to you if you are going to be cruzing at 65. I'll keep my CB on and be listening for chatter. If we happen to find you all, we'll just slow our roll and fall in w the rest of the convoy.
I am telln' ya today has drug on and on, and it's only because I'm so ready to just take off and get up there.
-
Ryan, if you catch us, you will be setting records! Yeah, 65 is my speed in the Jeep.
-
Ben you still plan to be at the cabins at 12?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
From the QT to Evarts, it is just a shade over 5 hours. So hope to be rolling into the cabins around 10:30-11am. Hoping to get about 250+ miles out of a tank so 1 fill up before I arrive in town will be needed. It is 293 miles total from the QT to cabins. {letseat}
-
http://countdown.onlineclock.net/
-
Heh heh.. I was under the impression that was the point, set records.. ;D. I usually like to roll between 65-70 myself as thats where I get my best MPG. But I do make exceptions from time to time. We'll see. If we catch up cool, if not oh well. Not like we're all going to end up in diffrent places when its all said and done anyway.
BUT... there's just something about rolling in a pack that's just friggn' cool. Ya know what I mean?
-
http://countdown.onlineclock.net/
Really cool! But its counting down WAY too slow... lol
-
Yes it is!
-
The cabins have mattresses on the bunks, right? Are you guys bringing a sleeping bag or sheets?
-
I didnt last year. Hell I think they even had sheets. I have slept in a lot worse {popcorn}
-
Yes our cabin has matresses and bedding (sheets) which are provided so no fart sack is needed. But you will need to bring your own pillow though.
-
Nice! The packing list keeps getting smaller and smaller...
-
Hey Danny...can you bring some small Allsouth stickers with you to Harlan? I'm not reppin!!
-
Come to think of it, I need to start decorating my rig as well.
-
Just wondering, too, since my boys & I are camping (I think someone else on here was too)... Will there be any way to contact the "cabin people"? I know you guys said cell service was bad up there. The cabins looked a good ways away from the campground...don't think even the best walkies will work over that distance. Also, will you guys use the Evart trailhead, or Putney, the one near the campground? Was just curious if you'd be coming past us on the way into the trails. I know, I just gotta be different!
-
Or.....maybe...is there still cabin room for me & my boys? Might just be easier. We can do a floor somewhere, too, if there's floorspace. I'd rather camp (in an ideal world), but I also want to make it easy to hit the trails with folks. Decisions, decisions.
If someone has space in their cabin for us, let me know.
-
Yea cell service is not happening anywhere near where we are. We are using the Evarts trailhead. I dont think our CB's even have the range to make calls between but maybe.
-
Here ya go man. PH# 606-273-8070 evening or 606-505-5403 day. Black Mountain Cabins.
However, we should have some open room in ours. David's the only other person in ours w us, leaving a bunk open if you're interested
-
Talked to David tonight. He sounded iffy on making it up. So might work out for you and the boys. There is no way to communicate from cabin to campdites. We do drive past the campgrpunds on the way to the trails. I will suggest you look at a map nemerous times before arriving cause you can't call anyone and the locals scare me ;)

If you are coming from south of Atlanta you may want to check out the I-75 route. It's 20 or 30 miles shorter and a very easy drive. Just a suggestion.
Obviously, it's not quicker for the GwinnettHeads. But if you are at the 75/85 split it is.
-
Yeah David's working on it. He's been kinda off and on for a few weeks now about it. If it turns out he can't make it, then we'll deffinately have plenty of room for you and the boys. If he does make it, we would still have floor space. {cheers2}
Yeah the I-75 route is the one we're planning on taking. It's 6.5 hours from here to there.
-
Absolutely. There are actually still two empty bunks. That I see besides my cabin. I have been debating cancelling it. It looks like we wont realy need it, but it never hurts to have the extra room.
You still in? Still have space in your cabin?
-
Yeah the I-75 route is the one we're planning on taking. It's 6.5 hours from here to there.
Guess Ill keep the CB on then. Channel 7. Ill be leaving Marietta hopefully at 6 headed up 75.

clothes are packed, jeep is washed, just need the groceries and I am done. I guess I can take the sleeping bag out since I do recall sheets </ROCKIN/> This weather has me foaming at the bit to go already! Nice cool night rides. We have to do mason jar one night. The view at night will be well worth the trip up there!

The cabin sleeps 4. And were only taking up 1 bed. David another. Leaving at least 2.. so yeah we got room man. No worries.

I would for sure want to run Mason Jar is the day light before a night ride! I am still not a big fan of night rides but I'll go on them at Harlan.

Hard to swing the $100 for parts, $115 in fuel, $35 for another pass and $$$ for eats all in the same weekend. If I had not put the gooseneck and bed liner in the new truck I would have some spare $$$.

Larry, you don't need to eat out everyday. PB&J dude! Not my fault you had to get that purdy new truck either ;D I have work to do, but can't get to it. Daydreaming. Woke up at 4am last night and laid there for an hour going over packing list and jeep list to bring ::)

no lights...no problem.
Go to this website: http://www.hirelittlepeople.com/ (http://www.hirelittlepeople.com/) Hire four midgets, one to hang off each fender flare, give them an LED flashlight, BOOM...instant rock lights.
I fix problems, it's what I do.
-
Now I wont lie... I found my trail map the other night and looked over it and thought about the trails. My last 2 mornings have been pretty packed between getting the house ready to be gone for a few days and packing. Dug out 1 of my old tarps so I dont have to put the top up every night
-
Friday is only day where rain could hit us. 40% day, 60% night. Just bringing the bikini top. Have not had the full top on since winter. I have no idea where my map is I bought last trip, but I know I uploaded a scanned version to the trail map section. So I will print a big 11x17 off and be good. Got groceries today. Spent $21.00! The rest goes to gas!

Would love being up there locked front and rear this time...............
Main thing to remember .....IT'S A DRY COUNTY and watch that night ride...LOL

Night riding is not fun until you turn the

I'll take the lights over the force up there! Yeah, it is a dry county so better get it before ya get there cause it's like 80 miles to the next stop for some. You can buy a trail map at the pay station, but just download it and print your own. {cheers2}
-
Ask Ben and Jeremy...a little poke at last years night ride </LMAO/>
-
Sometimes the names for the trails are VERY appropriate! ;D
-
I would like to forget that night ride! I think that was also what killed my stock battery while lugging Mike's jeep up the last "hill". Won't be on that trail this year.

I would like to plan to hit those same trails we started with last year. They were short but the all rock part was nice. And the fact the smaller guys could ride ahead and watch.

Winch did a pretty damn good job though..

Am I being too optimistic to leave the doors and soft top trim at home? :-)
All I'd have is a Spiderwebshade and a tarp... (and of course a cozy and dry tow rig for the ride up and back!)
-
Jerm, those trails are all close to the trail head so we can hit those for sure. Jared, check the weather, I am not bringing a top. It will be hit or miss up there on Friday.
-
Im leaving my full top and doors on just in case. I threw in the bikini top as well.
I got some stuff packed up today:

I'm just being lazy... I guess I'll throw them on.
Getting excited now! Dually's are on and rock lights are wired. I'm waiting for Amazon to deliver some magnets so I can actually mount the rock lights...
We should be up there around 2-3 on Thurs...
-
Well it sounds like we have enough lights for a great nite ride then. Duallys for the win! Tommorrow will be the longest day ever //SMOKEII//
-
Well, looks like I will be putting the top on for the trip. Weather is looking iffy now for fri and sat. I really don't want to run with the top as Harlan is a top rippin place.
-
Well ben, I'd have to say today is the longest day ever since I won't be getting off work until 9 tomorrow morning. LOL
WTF
-
And so it begins... the longest day ever ;D Put the top on last night. Found I can run the bikini under it without issue. I need a head count on who is following me up tommorrow. I don't want to sit and wait on anyone. I am not getting out of bed at 3:30am to wait on guys to roll in so here is who I have thus far...
1. Doug
2. Danny
3. Taztoy
4. Canejeep
Meet at the quiktrip at oakwood exit at 4:30 and roll out by 4:45. I will be on ch.7 if you miss us. Or get my cell # from the listing and give me a shout if you will be late or missed us. {letseat}

Well, It's been a very busy 2 weeks. With Football practice starting, Getting customers Jeeps ready for
this ride </ROCKIN/> , Very busy at the shop, family, blah, blah..... Soooo with all of that being said, I had to make the move and trade some stuff for this buggy, Just so I can make Harlan this year!! I will be at the shop ALL night getting it ready to go.
Ben, I'll let you know how It's looking tonight. If I can't meet you first thing in the am I will be right behind you. I'll keep you updated.

Danny, did you get the tire done?
-
Nope, I found a different place to do it but it takes about 8 hours per tire & we don't have that kind of time! NItto is giving me a set of 37's at their cost

Hey, any way to get to Harlan!!!
-
I'm out. It just keeps stacking up against me, and at some point you have to accept the reality. Too much at work and home, and weather now shows 60% chance on Friday at
http://www.weather.com/weather/5-day/Evarts+KY+USKY0881:1:US

{;-(}
-
Mark my words... if it starts to rain on the trails I am pulling over and tossing a tarp over the Jeep. Only got 28k miles on it, cant flood the inside yet
-
There is a way to prevent that....its called putting the full top on...
-
I wont have the doors, windows, or top on... Harlan is not kind to tops. My soft top has some almost rips from last year.
-
Jerm, I am only bringing the top incase of rain. I will not wheel with it on! Mason jar got mine both trips and i was lucky it was not worse! Lets hope we get scattered showers and that is it! I don't mind gettin wet, just not soaked!

Debating on letting the boys take all of Thursday off and leaving earlier, but I know we won't get out of here before rush hour, so probably still leaving here between 11-12.
I have officially cancelled my campground reservation, so hopefully between the two smaller cabins (thanks Zack & RD for getting back to me), we can find some space for my boys and I. Oh, and RD Slyter...awesome about the steaks, but my boys aren't big steak eaters (I know, what's wrong with them), so will definitely have a few extra for Saturday.
Debating about dropping my spare and roof rack at the cabins...sounds like a lot of off camber that can get close to the roofline. If Ben can run without a spare....so can I!
Oh, I pity my company...they've gotten so little work out of me this week. :)
Legggggggo!

I would do this for sure, getting the stuff off the top will help out a lot. If you need your spare on the trail, someone can go back and get it.
-
Yep Ben you saw my top.. it came real close to rips. I dont mind a little rain either but if a full on pour down comes my Jeep will become a tent until its finished.
Jason, I would drop it if we plan to run Mason Jar that day. Its the only trail I remember being an issue with the roof line. But if you catch a flat plenty of people to run back for the spare if a patch/plug cant fix it.
-
Done and done. Well, I'll do it when I get there...you get the idea.
-
Oh, also, just FYI, I printed out 4 extra 11 x 17 Harlan trail maps. So, if you see me before you grab one (or want to wait), I have extras. Glossy color from my work laser printer.
-
Ive got one 22x34 that I printed on one of our plotters. I was going to print it out on a roll of water proof paper, but after a test run it was not as clear on that paper.

Bigger's not always better...at least that's what my girlfriend keeps telling me. ;)
That does give me an idea, though. Maybe I'll laminate it, so it doesn't get trashed, as most of my trail maps do by the end of the ride.
-
Look's like im going to be making this one too! </ROCKIN/>
Danny can't get the Cherokee ready so we are scrambling to get this buggy ready tonight and hopefully we'll be on the way early tomorrow!
{cheers2}

Awesome trip!! Me and Adam were up 43 hours straight, worked on the rig from 5:00 Wednesday until 8:30 Thursday morning, finished the rig, loaded up and drove 6 hours to Harlan, wheeled until 2:00 am. Then drove back in time to be at my sons first football game.
By the way, we were the "under dogs" and we beat the other team 39-13. ;D
Awesome weekend!!

Glad your boy won Danny. I was going to message you about the game. We are here in Lexington with some friends tonight. Had an awesome trip. Rain yesterday lasted all of 10 minutes maybe. Today I attempted to lead to give Ben a break but the right side of the park isn't marked with signs very well and most of the trails end up with steep climbs we have no business on. Either way was still a good day. My jeep still drives straight and other than a dent in the rear corner at the bottom I came away pretty good. Metalcloak is having free shipping this weekend so maybe it's full corner time...

Got home about 3:30. Awesome trip...so glad we went. Soooooo worn out right now...will make a more detailed post later.
Lost my passenger back glass on one of the infamous "night rides" leaning it on a tree. No other carnage to speak of.
Great trails, weather & company!!
-
Well, we finally got home. What an awesome time! Dawns making CDs of pics for anyone who wants one. Just PM me your address so I can get it to you. So far I'm tracking Ben and Todd who want a disc. Also, I'll post a link to Dawns FB page of the pics she took in a later post. Feel free to copy what ever you wnat from that album. I think I'm going to wait to finish cleaning the jeep for another day. Right now it's </BEER/> :30 I'm friggn' beat!
Other than that, it was an absolutely wicked time riding with everyone! I can't wait for jeep fest next month now!! {cheers2}

They weren't that kinky...
Great trip this weekend! Had a fun group, weather was amazing, and the trails were fantastic.
Just glad Ryan was there to help me drink that Makers Mark. :-)
Thanks to everyone for putting up with my Dad. :-). He had a blast...

Even at the top of the mountain we could barely send a text or make a call. Except for my Dad who had perfect coverage everywhere on the mountain! (Verizon)

I just sat down, literally. Got home a few hours ago and came home to a house with NO AC! Been workin on it but no luck. Unpacked everything and parked the jeep. No clean up. I am beat! Temp in the house is 80+ and it sucks! Mountains were nice and cool, hot and humid here >:( Had an absolute blast as usual for Harlan. Trails were great and way different than last year! Great group and nobody had to be drug around. Props to Ryan!! There is a good bit of a carnage list from us all. I had to replace a valve stem one morning, bent a rim and bent the right rear brake line on a rock (pinched). But will post pics tomorrow. Brought the video camera but it went dead the 1st dang day and I never charged. I was busy on this trip leadin and spottin. Mason jar in the dark going the wrong way is definitely one of my top 5 night rides. It was just as fun headin up in the day. Tired, that is all... ;D
-
Great pictures
-
Yeah absolutely the best trails I've seen! It looked exactly like Tellico at some points! Ryan your Jeep did awesome.
I will be back the second my XJ is finished {letseat} (Lion's den) . Jared your dad is awesome, it looked like he was having a great time, Very cool! And once again we had a great group with us, Can't wait until the next ride!
Oh yeah, thanks again Todd for letting me catch a ride. That night ride was awesome!!

Thanks again Ben for the leading. I tried to give you a break Saturday but the right side of the park just wouldn't let me win! Stupid lack of signs and steep trails... Again Harlan was awesome and those who missed it missed another great trip. It was a little more wet this time than last year but there was still plenty to do. My carnage was coming down a ledge and catching the bottom rear corner of the tub. I bent it back some with vice grips and found some touch up paint at an Autozone in Lexington that matches my paint code perfectly. I am ready for bed after the drive to Harlan, a late night ride, all day friday, part of saturday, 3 hours to Lexington, late night with friends and then 6 hours back home...

Im finally able to get on a computer. Mad it home yesterday at about 4. Unpacked and cleaned the jeep some. Only damage I have is broken front inner and outer axle shaft on the drivers side front axle. I have a few scrapes down the side fo the flat fenders, and stinger. I think those are from the night ride as well. I am currently going through Drake's photos. There are about 1500 or so, it may be a little later this week before I get some up.

Man, going back to work today SUCKED! It took me all day just to get myself into the swing of things and focus on anything but wishing I was still up there. Yeah We were beat, but really I coulda gona another week and been ok with that.
Danny, Ben... Everyone really, thanks for the vote of confidence with such an under-built rig. Kinda got a bit of a big head about it now though... lol I guess I could say I earned it for a little while at least. ;D
Glad everyone likes the pics. I cant wait to see the rest of them come down the pipe. {cheers2}

Yeah We were beat, but really I coulda gona another week and been ok with that.
Always thought doing a full week up there would be awesome. Esp with zip lines and another offroad park to the south (we passed the bridge to go to it not long before we got to Harlan). Its possible... just need the money and time off of work to make it happen.
-
Didn't even know there was another park out there.. Sa WEET!!

Everything on that page leads me to believe it may be an ATV park...

I have seen pictures on other forums of Jeep beings there. But reviews seem to show its trails and mud, not a lot of rock. Still would be cool to explore something new, just an option.

Pictures look great. Really wish I could have come.

Heck yeah guys. Ya'll did a great job leading. Im sure Drake would love to be at the rides. The more photos he gets the more his name gets out there as a photographer. These are the unedited versions of his shots. He can edit them however anyone pleases. If anyone wants his contact info I can get it for you.
Also, the videos will be next. I need to compile them first.

Ben I gota tell ya, when I heard that about doing Mason Jar backwords over the net, I was like "Are you kidding?!?" But it turned out to be one seriously epic ride! Even if there was a little bit of carnage to be had... heh heh (window - tree) </ROCKIN/>

I'd like to </BEER/> to Ben and Jermy for leading the pack! You fellas did a one hell of a bang up job out there!
The credit has to go to Ben. All I did was spotting and stacking now and then. Ben lead us around the park like a pro and I am glad there are plenty of pictures of it. I known in the past the lead man rarely gets pictures.
