Title: Anybody into the whole RC crawler thing?
Post by: BigJerm on November 17, 2008, 09:35:35 PM
I ran through a thread on JKowners and folks rave on this thing. I check it out, pretty neat little toy. Looks like it will run you around $230 shipped from Ebay, maybe a little more.

o... Well we can start a new thread  ;D

These look awesome. That Losi Mini crawler is supposed to be a fully ready to run out of the box RC... Not bad when you cant go wheeling more than once a month, if that. Maybe one day I will buy one, after the lift and skids though.

I have looked at getting a toy though; I like toys, gadgets, ect... I saw this Jeep at radio-shack. Working headlights, hi and low range, only 2wd though. Could always do like my brother did years ago when we were little and flip an axle out of another 2wd and put it in the front of the Jeep to have a true 4wd and solder in some small pieces of metal to make it a locked axle in the rear (yes he did really “weld” the rear axle of an RC truck, lol). Then I could take the body off, sand and paint it red to match, paint the fenders black, cut off the sides of the front brush guard looking thing and take off those plastic chrome boxes on the side, shave the bottom and relocate any electronics near the bottom or any that might be in the chrome boxes up into the body cavity…. All for the price of about $45 and having fun doing it! Well it would cost more if I have to get another RC car to get an axle….

I found a website for it but looks like their forum is down right now. Pretty cool joint:

I would never get that hardcore into... I mean guys have rigs with 2 or 3 grand invested in them... Not for me. Just looking for a little side hobby and a replace it when I break it kind of thing.

I have a Traxxus Stampede electric I need to sale.  If any one is interested let me know and I will send photos.  It is pretty fast.  I have 2 batteries and a great charger also.

You can check it out here.  there is a short video of its capabilities..

Enjoy

My nieghbor has a gas one, it's cool to run but doesn't make a good crawler, wide open throttle and rocks don't mix even in RC's. The electric ones have better throttle control.

Dead serious man but they are like super hardcore competition people. I mean everything you can buy for your Jeep... you can buy for one of these R/C crawler things it seems. I even saw a thread where a guy was making and selling winches that actually worked for $200. I would never get that into it. I mean its cool to have 1 and maybe spend $250 for the rig, buy a few parts and play around in the backyard or living room but not $2k worth and compete...
Title: Re: Anybody into the whole RC crawler thing?

SO today I got me a "crawler"  ;D

Paid $25 to some guy on Craigslist for an Xmod... Not bad and apparently I got a hell of a deal on it... Lets see the Hummer kit alone cost around $79-99 now since it is discontinued model. Then the guy has the 4wd kit installed ($15), under body neon kit ($15) and a suspension lift kit that supposely is hard to find now days and people Ebay them around $50 for the kit! So for $25 I got an RC car worth over $100 used as is.

Got it home, got open the rear diff and glued it together so now it is locked!  ;D the guy who had it flipped around the front body mount to lift the front higher but I might flip it back cause it makes it look funny and un-even and during flex the front tires dont come close to hitting the fenders.

2 Bad things... one batteries only last about 20-25 minutes so need to get recharble ones for sure. 2, the stock bearings on the wheels are plastic and have a lot of play and it slows down the vehicle to almost a dead stop sometimes. So I need to get some metal bearings to fix that issue.

Haha these things are so fun! So I took super glue and locked the front and rear diffs and seeing that it is IFS it does not affect steering. Then I did some messing around and got a lot more flex with a little cutting here... shaving there... Now I either need to figure a way to lift the body up to allow the flex or cut the body... Pictures

Before any work was done flex. This is rear wheel, one 3 tires and the other rear wheel is just a touch off the ground:

After a little work... 4 tires, a 9v battery and all 4 wheels on the ground:

It could go all the way but the motor power wires would pull tight if flexed the other way...

Title: Re: Anybody into the whole RC crawler thing?
Post by: urdaddyjeep on November 24, 2008, 06:41:46 AM
what credit card... Jerm dude you have to much time on your hands.... I would change out the springs.. get some bigger ones. and those orange plastic pieces change those out with some thing else that is stronger... when you do that make sure the space is bigger.. your lift will come with that..
Title: Re: Anybody into the whole RC crawler thing?
Post by: BigJerm on November 24, 2008, 08:01:59 AM
haha Glenn I did it while watching 24, took about an hour to do total.

Mike, wish i could but believe it or not all that orange stuff is the only lift out there for the Xmods... I am sure someone could make one but I lack the skills for all that. Seems the common thing to do is bigger tires and body lift to clear the tires. The body is hollow so it keeps the COG around the chasis and doesn't get to tippy...

The only thing I dont like is the 4x4 system. The motor is on the rear wheels and through a series of gears and a long drive shaft that runs through the chasis the front wheels are powered. Problem with this is if the rear wheels get jammed on a ledge the front can’t turn independently to pull it over. Since there is no slippage in the system if the front wheels get jammed on something, the back wheels can’t turn either.

cheapest, most fun toy I have ever had. I ordered some new gears and metal bearings to replaced the worn out cracked plastic ones and they should be here soon. So for a total of less than $50 I get to have some fun. Then when I am done I can sell this thing for probably a $100 or more because they don't make this model anymore or the lift kit!

very nice! I am curious to if it was ready to run or not.

I have put new metal bearings in my little toy to replace the crap, loose plastic ones and my new gears came yesterday. Those made a huge change even on half battery life. Total money in my litle project including the hummer, less than $50.

Sweet!! Larry, did you build it from the ground up or did it come complete? Total price? Thanks!

ARTR $249
Novak motor and ESC (Brake unit) $109
Fubatub radio with two cheap servos $53
Battery and charger $40
My total was $494 after tax.

I had to put the motor, ESC and servo on the truck and program the ESC.
I will up grade to a split battery pack over the front end and a metal high speed, high tq servo at a later date. Plus add wheel weights.

I played with this thing for hours last night.

You can buy a RTR that has everything just add batteries for $259. It has plastic links but is a great unit and you can upgrade the links and any thing elese at a later date.

Nice Losi!

Must be in the air, I did my first comp/shootout on the 9/3 and place 2nd out of 10 folks. I just bought a new ESC, Lipo batteries, 4 link plates, tires and sold off my old stuff.

Might be picking up an Axial RTC on the cheap tomorrow.

Good stuff. I found some rocks in the backyard and cleared out a place on the hill and have been rock crawling ever since. I flipped the shocks per everyone saying that it performs better but I am not sold on it. It did limit flex some but almost to much. Biggest thing is relocating the battery from the top of the chasis to somewhere lower to get the COG down...

Either way this thing is a lot of fun!

Man o man having a blast with this thing. I had to put back together a drive shaft but other than that no problems. I put the battery on the back axle to lower COG and I need some wheel weights on the fronts now.

Here is my "rock garden" on a little hill in my backyard

sorry for a late reply but yeah man this stuff is pretty fun. My losi was $240 or something new but you can find them used about $150. They are smaller (1/18th scale) but big enough to wheel outside on rocks and inside on the couch. All i have done is moved some of the electronics and battery around for a lower COG and balance.

Nice. What Servo is that? I had to ditch the cheap Losi servo with plastic gears (I broke them) and picked up a Hitec 225mg today. Much better, still small enough to use the stock mount but has metal gears so now its time to break the next weak link....

Already was looking at some of the axial's at the hobby shop... a 1/10 might be in the future

I have done a little more work on the Losi moving things around lowering the COG and got a nice little rock pile in the backyard to play around on. Anyone who is interested in this who wants a "scale" looking rig should check this thing out. All you need to do is go buy a battery and charger. Most places have it around $299

That body looks good! I got my Losi lower now and put on some Proline Chisel tires... What a change in traction

Nice pictures. Where are the comps at? I am going to a comp in Gwinnett later in the month to try my hand at the 1.9s

Well I decided it is time to finish all these half done projects so I started back on the Losi. Finished moving the electronics, everthing lowered, a set of beadlocks put on that I got stupid cheap and my bent lower links are on the way. I will try a comp once I get the links so it should be interesting compared to others with much more modded rigs.
