Title: So what makes a mall crawler a mall crawler?
Post by: jeepjunky68 on August 05, 2014, 06:34:34 PM
I read a post in here mentioning some mall crawlers had a trail reserved for a ride so the person that posted that did not want to go ride with the mall crawlers for a reason I forget at the moment. I would have to go back and find the exact post.

But anyway, I was just curious what makes a mall crawler get labeled as a mall crawler and is there any kind of animosity (for lack of a better word) between people with well built hard core rigs and these mall crawlers?

I also wondered if my Jeep would be considered a mall crawler at it's current stage. Not that it really matters to me as I am working to change that slowly.

Please note that this is just a friendly general discussion and I am not trying to get anyone worked up or start a "my rig is better than your rig" war!

It's really in jest, hopefully no real animosity.

To me the driver is what gets tagged a mall crawler not the vehicle.  I know plenty of people that hit trails pretty hard with less built Jeeps than those who don't wheel at all.  But basically it's a person with a built Jeep, whether really built or made to look built with a few bolt on parts, that never goes off road.

Good thing is they will come up for sale at some point and someone can get a good deal on a decent vehicle.

Interesting. I thought it was some kind of label given to 4wd's that had budget or lower priced lift kits and not all the fancy expensive parts.

I know there are some out there that do not care for particular brand lifts because they are the lower end kits so I was thinking maybe that is what made a mall crawler.

This is my son Matt's Jeep and it is most certainly a Mall Crawler!!!!! The only time it go's off road is when I drive it.   //LMAO//

The Jk is my wife's stock jeep and goes off road all the time!

Has nothing to do with budget, but with the fact of what have and how you use it.

This is at no one and is a pure example: If a jeep on 33's will go and WHEEL a pretty good trail, but a 1 ton'd rig won't, I call the 1 ton a mall crawler. It's for show and will not be used for its intended purpose. The next issue may be about breaking something, but knowing the limits of the rig will come into play. Spend time with it, learn, and also reading on the internet will explain a lot of things.

I know of 2 such mall crawlers around here. Their jeeps ( a sahara and a rubicon) are set up for crawling but when I ask them to go wheel them they say NO! 1 even refuses to get the tires dirty!

Now that's funny. I will say that I was following Doug up some nasty trails at Golden, and he went on more that I felt fine saying nope, not me! After some run ins with a few trees and the insurance claim that followed I'm more a mall crawler now than most anyone on here. I'll still go on trails, just none where I need even 10% of what I have done to mine. So in short, I guess I am classified as borderline mall crawler. Still rocking all my rocker damage though from Golden and Chocco!

Nice enough group of guys, I just couldn't be happy only riding Bell, Dodd, Charlies, Dicks, Trey, and the similar others. The trails are pretty easy and I would need more variety. I like what and where you guys ride, I just feel like a big tampon around you all because guys in here on 33s are pushing harder than I am willing to on 42s. I am man enough to admit my rig`s capabilities outweigh my pockets ability to repair it.

You went from zero to the speed of light with your rig build, so it isn't surprising you need more seat time to be comfortable with the rig's capabilities. Additionally, you actually drive your vehicle to work, or at least I think you do, so you shouldn't be taking unreasonable risks.  IMHO, the lesser built rigs that go for the crazy stuff should be driven by guys with trailers and another vehicle capable of getting them to/from work.

May be a nice enough group of guys.  They are just pounding the same few trails every weekend with large groups of Jeeps.  I don't think those trails can sustain that amount of traffic.  And with the large groups you get more chance of people wandering off the legal roads.  Apparently it's a touchy subject for them, like I said that is all they do, every weekend.

Anyway, back on topic.  Go to any Meet and Greet type event and you will see plenty of Mall Crawlers first hand.  Look for unscratched paint, nice and shiny black under carriage and/or fancy exhaust tips coming out below the bumper.   //no//

This makes me feel better, no damage apparent on JK but when you look at my mangled exhaust end, rock rails, and undercarriage armor yes, its been on the rocks.  I threw Doug out there but my JK is at the gym, library, grocery or Lake Lanier most of the time its not looking great in front of the houzz.

Yes and also sharing my opinion that I think they are over-riding those trails and will lead to either ultimate closure or grading of the main road and blockage of everything else.

Mine is a lawn ornament. My neighbor asked the other day if there would ever come a day I didn't have to work on it. Lol. My 98 stayed around for a long time like that too. I wish I still had that thing and had put a motor in it instead of parting it out, or done the part out differently at least.

Never too old to wheel, just to old to drive on the streets. Years ago, in JP mag, there was a 94 year old man wheeling a fairly new blue Rubicon in Moab.

You don't stop playing because you grow older, you grow older because you stop playing.

Op, my family rig gets labeled as a mall crawler all the time. I guess I can see why, but still. Running 4.25" of lift with fab'd Duroflex rear lca's and upper tri link, f&r ARB's, and some other stuff. What's funny is running the same trails as the guys labeling my rig as a mall crawler,  and doing it just as well if not better. It's definitely a sleeper. IMO, mall crawlers are the guys that have decently built rigs, and always talk about wheeling but never do it, with more form than function. It's definitely been a fun build so far, and a good learning experience. I bought it from my sister for right at $500, so I didn't mind dropping a little money on mods. I'll tell you, once they get around 180k miles everything starts falling off.  At the first of the year I plan to start the SAS with my JK d44, 12" Fox c/o's, Clayton TJ RE style radius arms, and 4 link rear. I just need  to gather a few more parts. For now, I enjoy wheeling something you don't usually see out on the trails. While not as capable as the bigger rigs, I can hang with them by putting my skids to work.

Yea, I watched the build videos the other day and came across a build thread on one of the KJ forums. They definitely transformed it into a beast of a rig, and spent a boatload of money(well someone did). It seemed they went a little skimpy on the axles considering they were running 40 ' s on it. I always enjoy seeing rigs that aren't typically turned into crawlers get built all out like that. Hell, even a Prius with the same mods would be pretty sick. I'd have to say, a KJ wouldn't be at the top of my list when building to go on the UA
