Venison - where to buy?
« on: December 27, 2013, 07:02:09 PM »
My wife is cooking up a dinner for friends on the 30th, most of whom were not born in the USA and who have probably never tasted venison.  I was thinking we could serve some at the dinner if we could find some good cuts and a good recipe for preparing them.  Anyone here got some for sale, or know someone?  Need enough for 8 ppl.

Might want to make know what you are looking for.

IE type of meat. Ground, tenderloin, cube meat, and on.

Don't know, but needs to be easy to prepare for a novice.

Back straps make for good fajitas.  As with any meat for fajitas, cut in strips across the grain.  Marinate and cook medium...or to your liking.

I agree with Clark.

You could also do jalapeño (or regular) burgers  with ground venison.  Grilled or oven baked. I prefer ground with NO beef fat if oven cooked, but the beef fat helps it stay pattied on the grill. Cubed is also a good one. I know around here, the local deer processors sell meat. I'd start there. Since its not USDA approved its going to be hard to find it for sale. You might bump into someone at the deer processor that has a bunch. Field and stream has a recipe section for wild game on their website, might want to check it out. I usually try to keep my deep freezer stocked with a bunch. I'd eat it in place of beef if I had enough

If you don't prepare it regularly for yourself, I wouldn't prepare it for guests.  Seems like most folks that didn't grow up on it don't care for it

Try making burgers with venison and use bacon as the fat instead of beef fat... your welcome!

I'm with Doug on this one. Don't experiment for guests. Do that on your own time until you "master" it. Then share amongst friends and family.

I will trying a lot of recipes out this year. Getting some roasts, cube meat and hope to find a good sausage/ jerky guy local.

I've grown tired of this.
