Helping a friend in the morning/rear drive shaft removal
« on: January 02, 2016, 10:59:01 PM »
I have friend with a 12 jku.  That says his drive shaft is just spinning when he puts it in gear, thinks his teeth on the ring gear may be shot. Is there anything special to removing the rear drive shaft or can I just loosen the bolts and remove it? I have never done this before. What better way to learn than on some one else's jeep. Planning to remove the rear drive shaft so he can limp home in 4 high on the front. Thoughts?

Make sure the front doesn't have a locker, especially a lunchbox or auto locker.  It will be the most terrifying ride home ever...just call a tow truck.  Where is he located now and where does he need to go...lots of trucks and trailers in the club.

I would be really suprised if every tooth on the ring gear is sheared to allow the DS to free spin.

Something else is up.

He's the guy that got me into GATR. Jeeps at Lee road and I 20 at the gas station north of I-20. I'm picking him up at 8 and heading to the jeep. He lives just south of there off Lee road. There was talk of trying to get it to a mechanic/friend just 10 min more down the road to do the surgery/repair. It's a bummer because he just got this jeep in October with 73k on it. He rode Tray today so you never know what might have occurred. I wasn't with him.

If anyone is going to know about blown out ring gears, it's tcdawg!

Can the factory dc cv joint get blown out to the point it causes what was described about the problem?

He said he lost forward drive and had to put it in reverse and creep off of I 20 to the gas station.

I anyone is around In The mornin and wants to stop by round 8:30-9:00 I-20 and Lee Rd.  hit me up 404-819-3941. I need some shut eye. Rode Flat Lands today. Was kinda worried because they don't all look like FS roads/Legal. More on that later I guess.

transmission is what I would suspect.  Again, @tcdawg is the most experienced with this.

After thinking about it...no need to remove the rear drive shaft if the gears in the rear diff are effed..just put it in 4wd.

But, based on what you just posted, and Tony's experience, I think it is something else.
