New Front Axle
« on: December 11, 2008, 02:28:59 PM »
Well i think i have finally made up my mind on what i want to do.  I am going to buy a ford hp 44 front axle.  I figure i can build it for under 1000.

I am going to try and sell my dana 30 for $600 and that should give me a good start.

build cost

axle (around $200 i hope) 65"WMS and i am going to run 2" wheel spacers to make the rear around 64"
4.88's $400 installed ( i am going to weld the front)
tubing and steering $160

This leaves abound 200 for the warn hubs and new ball joints.

What do yall think?

Thanks, I'll do it to myself.   {;-(} [hammer]    Missed that on the Blackberry.
I like the switch on the dash that makes it so easy to turn or be locked.  More mooola.

Question, if you want a 44 maybe you should look at a JK  MoPar for 1500 from 4wd.com. Just a thought.

Good luck!

Wasn't going to do that. I like the switch on the dash also, ARB style. If I ever trash inside my 44 I will install ARB in it.

Alex Good luck with finding one that cheap. I have one here at the house but I would let go for 150 but It dont have hubs steering or shafts. It does have knuckles and ball joints. If you cant find any thing else it would be a good cheap start.

Also if you plan to spool it or weld it I would either upgrade the shafts or carry extras.

Not to hijack, but where would be a good place for me to look for some spare shafts Richard. Any yards around Macon with decent prices. I would really like to just go to chromo's and keep my other ones for spares, but that aint happening no time soon.

Im in the same boat. I used my spare pass. so now I dont have a spare.  Its hard to find a complete axle so finding shafts are even harder. I have seen a few in the pull aparts but I never grabbed any cause I had spares. I will be going to the pull a part after christmas so I will keep my eyes out but in the mean time this is what I planned to do,

http://broncograveyard.com/bronco/i-22034N_d44_chrome_moly_4340_front_axle_set.htm
and buy the 36.00 u joints

or this
