Making Synthetic Rope
« on: September 22, 2014, 02:06:41 PM »
So, i have been able to create some successful slings out of 7/64th Amsteel (blue) which is very strong, and was thinking of buying just a set length
of the Amsteel (blue) and then attaching it my self.   I can make the fixed end loop that will hold at the end (done it several times now) so its just a matter of buying the rope, and threading it on the wench.

question based on this chart..   what size should i get.   if this works out, maybe i can make some synthetic winch line for the club.
http://www.samsonrope.com/Pages/Product.aspx?ProductID=872

I will see what colors i can get.   Maybe i can make some for the club and sell them for cost?

seems that 3/8 is the size for 100 feet places are selling this for 325 - 370.    I will see if i can get the rope for less, i can make this super easy.

this is the same stuff i use to make my Hammock suspension, Amsteel, the fixed end that i use/make for my hammock setup is the same fixed end you do for the synthetic rope.

cheapest i can get the rope for is 2.41 per foot for 3/8 which is rated at (black, blue, green orange).  rated at 17,600    not sure what length is really needed.

100'  = $241   + shipping etc..   80' is $192.80 + shipping etc.

Like i said, i can make the fixed end to hold, and connecting to the winch is easy peasy.

On a side note, buying more. in 100ft sections seems to be cheaper, but over what i can float.  maybe some guys want to go in on buying some to get the cost down?

Are you planning to take synthetic rope in bulk and create order to length winch line?  Will the creation include the winch drum connection (screw hole for most winches / anchor loop for some Warn winches), drum heat protector, rock protector, and eye loop for the hook/thimble?

I just bought a 50' 3/8" Amsteel line with the screw hole winch drum connection, drum heat protector, 10' rock guard, and eye loop.  Including shipping, it was about $3.3/ft from an online retailer.

I think so.  I went with 50' because I rarely need more than that and you get closer to the max pulling force of a winch if your line is not multiple wraps on the spool.  You can get long tow straps or winch line extenders if you need extra length.

After making several hammocks and using Amsteel, I will never use anything else. the hollow core makes it a breeze to make endless loops.

I'd be interested in that thimble, my hook is not setup well as I have a hawse fairlead, do you care to part with it?

I paid $25 for it a long while ago, so that's what I'll take.  I'll bring it to Gatrfest.
