Who bought "special drinks" from gulches?
« on: December 30, 2014, 01:07:25 PM »
I had this mason jar for a while and moved it from the fridge to the freeze. I just noticed the freaking thing is almost frozen. I remember asking the proof and they said 150. Maybe 150% water. If I knew the guy I would be asking for my money back. I'm pissed.

I bought some pink stuff but haven't tried it yet.  He said it was 120 proof.  I was skeptical.

These days you can get so much good flavored, regulated alcohol, there is no reason to buy from the back of a truck.

That's the problem with bootleg whiskey.  No regulation.

It's not really even alcohol, really. I doubt it's 30%. I like the real stuff and have had some.

Have you ever proofed it?  Normally you need the starting gravity and final gravity, but there may be other ways to determine the level of alcohol.

A quick search of the internet didn't yield a result besides the shake method.  I would think there would be a way based on freezer temperature, but IDK.

Check out the Turbo 500 if you want to make your own.  Be aware the Turbo 500 is small enough to be moved from one house to another if you work out a sharing agreement.   Let me know if you get one, I have some old homebrew that I'd like to distill.  I'll split the product with you.

I have never proofed it.

The reason Mike's shine is so good is that it is smooth and drinkable. It's not that "I'm a badass, I make shine at 150 proof" crap. It is almost always around 90 proof, sometimes up to 100 but that's a max. Based on my years of experience, I agree with what he tells me.
