Just think of it as a Rubi 44 with more ground clearance ;)

....Which is what it is  ;D

Well, not exactly.  The weakness that I found in the D30 was the flex that allows the TINY ring and pinion to change relationship and break teeth.  The 44 ring and pinion is MUCH larger and stronger.  I also have the Alloy's and Super Joints, but I've never broken a shaft or joint.  I'm sure that's next now that I said it.   ;D

Fish, I've seen you drive that thing, and you're not scared of the skinny.  IMHO, D30's won't last unless you crawl'um.  Ask me how I know!

Kyle, some good info in this thread: http://naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=903858&highlight=non-disco+shaft+swap

Looks like you have to change one axle seal.

Also, you might want to check when you put your diff cover on the HP axle, they might have different height fill holes. I think I have an HP30 and LP30 diff cover in my storage unit, if they are different you can have the HP30 cover.

Yea, all you need is that cover plate and another seal. To make thing easier on you, I would keep your current outers, or at least the brakes that came on yours.

i was planning on running the shafts, brakes, etc out of my stock d30. i think i might go ahead and replace the ball joints too. how much do d30 ball joints cost? will it be worth replacing them? this is an 1989 axle...i figure they might be due for a change.

I agree.  That's an awesome deal.  This is the road I was was referring to.  I have 2 D30 ring gears that look exactly like his.  The fella that I sold my HP30 to trussed it up pretty good.

welp the axle i bought has 3.55 gears in it (39 ring gear teeth and 11 pinion teeth).

so the search goes on. if i can find a hp30 with 3.73s thats the route i'll go. if not im going to try and find (hopefully) some used 3.73 hp gears or just another lp30 on the cheap.

if all else fails i will just but a hp30 with 4.10s and an 8.8 with 4.10s and sell my d44 and have $800 to spend on something else.

anyone have any other suggestions?

sell the 44  ;D.  You are building a longarm anyway, so why cut of the brackets on the 44 when it is work $$ with the brackets.
