Will - Unfortunately, you are probably right on the money and I was hoping to avoid crawling underneath the jeep - it's cold here and I'm just not that interested in dropping my belly pan to get to it......................

You may be able to get to it without taking off the skid. I can't remember how far the tranny sits up in the tub, but the linkage is on the side so if you can get some light and a hand to it and see if it's loose or not that would save you some time. Good luck. I hate these freakin skids so much. Mine was so bent up that one time after I took it off it flexed out and there were not 2 holes that lined up on opposite sides so I had to drill them out a pretty good ways. I have a piece a scrap hanging to the bottom of my Jeep  :bs)   :D  It will go when I get the time cause I've got plenty of metal.

Anyways, good luck with the fix. Keep us updated.

Ok, I finally crawled under the jeep today and found the problem. Now my problem is I don't know how to fix it. What I found was that the cable came off right where it connects to the shift arm on the tranny. It's a ball and socket connection, so all I did for now was take a couple of zip ties to it.

It should snap back on. If not you will prob need a new cable.

Where is the cable disconnected exactly? Is the problem not the end ring where it connects to the shift post? This is the 42RLE right? 03-06 automatic?

Edit: Right before it goes into the tranny right? You should be able to loosen the screw on the ring and slide it back on the arm then tighten it back down.

After doing just a little research I came across these:

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product__9110078-P_N3131_A%7CGRP2037____

Ok I think I know what part your talking about know. Did that arm break or are the bushings just shot? I don't see how the cable could come disconnected if the end at the shift post didn't come off...
