When is the next Expedition ride?
« on: October 19, 2011, 11:22:34 PM »
Hey guys,

Just wondering if the club was planning any Expedition rides for new jeepers like myself.  I drove Chattahoochee river road close to Helen last weekend with the family but it was nothing.  I was expecting a few creek crossing but it was just a FS gravel road with no challenges whatsoever.  Anyway, I read a few things about Nimblewill Gap and roads around Amicalola Falls and a saw a couple of youtube videos and it looked like a lot of fun for a new jeeper with a stock rig like myself.  However, I didn't want to do it alone.
So, I was just wondering if the club ever rides out there and when you guys might be going next, cause I would love to join.

Thanks in advance.

Amicalola mountain road is no longer like that. It was grated out for the most part and made more 2wd friendly. Still a nice ride but no real challenge.

Welcome to GATR.  Our rides are for CORE members, and CORE membership will open again soon, most likely Nov 1 or so.  Details to come.

CORE members see all of the forums, and receive swag, and a free ride (lol, nothings free in the sport  ;D) at GATRFEST every year.

Or just hang around till someone post up then come out. I ride the mountain now and then. With the cold weather it gets nice. All the leaf lookers will be gone soon.

When are you thinking about making a forestry run ?
We can plan a ride after the winter ride at Durhamtown. I would love to go check out some creek crossings closer to the end of the year.

I can lead a small group thru helen to dahlonega. I know some good firebreak roads on the way ;)
I've grown tired of this.

There are two ungraded FS road climbs that I know of that are good first 4x4 rides for newbies and stock jeeps.

Frosty Mountain - this is a turn off of the road between Amicalola Lodge and Nimblewell Gap.  At the top are the remains of an old fire lookout tower.

Hawk Mountain - mild rocky climb, with a couple of small ledges at the top.  There's an old helipad there.  It's off FS69 between Winding Stair Gap and the fish hatchery.

I heard all of the Amicalola stuff was graded kvom. Not a 100% sure if that road was but the main Amicalola Mtn road was for sure.

Hawk Mountain is a fun little road...There was a dead tree blocking part of the road, about 50 feet tall leaning on another tree, that I winched out of the way about a month ago.  I never realilzed it was a helipad but saw the concrete marker and thought it was an old military mountain peak marker for drop-offs.

Definitely my favorite spot to camp.
