My friend has his FFL and can get the ATI Omni Hybrid for $650.  This is optic ready, so it looks just like the photo less the scope, forward grip & strap.  It comes with one mag, 1:7 twist & is chambered at 5.56/.223 and quad rail.  Let me know if your interested as I'm thinking of having him order me one.

Bobby's correct in saying that one can go a bit crazy on building an AR. Most of the custom guns I've done have been 900 dollars and up but were all built using high end parts.

I've been good friends with David and Rich over at Cherokee Gun and Pawn for a long time. Good folks and they always have great prices. I never really competed with them on rifles since they sold volume and I focused on the higher end custom rifles.

The market is very over saturated right now and if you do a bit of work you can find some good parts to build a rifle at a reasonable price.

Here are a few of the rifles I've built over the years.

I tend to build AR's with brand name parts if I ever needed or wanted to sell I could sell fast for more money than I had in it.  When the AR craze started every manufacturer started making AR parts. Just like off road companies.

AJ, i really like that one your thinking about ordering.  except for the handle thats at the end.. different color.  I would like without that handle part down by the end of the barrel.  besides that, looks nice..

Look for Key marked Forge upper and lowers or milled upper and lowers. Milled are usually more cost and usually nice fit. Forged have markings like Key hole , square or triangle markings on them. Real small. Also you want to build a milspec rifle not a commercial spec rifle.

So don, your saying the 499. gun at cherokee would be good, safe, quality.  ..  shoot it for say 6m or so, and learn more about the AR and what i like/dont like. then look more serious about building a new one?

I just had an AR 15 built for me custom to what I wanted. Personally I would do some research, look at whats out there and then build something based on what you want. There are alot of cheap AR deals out there but the old saying, you get what you pay for applies here. Just like jeep parts, it works the same for guns. You buy a cheap gun you will need to replace things eventually. I built an all aero precision AR15 .223/ .556 with the colors I wanted, handguard length, style and all for a good price. Now I am saving for the optics. I have magpul flip ups and am deadly at 100yds with it. Maybe I will get a bonus at xmas and be able to buy a good red dot optic.
I've grown tired of this.

ATI may have made some changes over the past year but I would stay away from polymer receivers.  The benefit isn't there with all the other options out there.

Thanks! I'm going to hold and continue shopping/researching.
